Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Services recorded a growth of 6.4 per cent to 133.2 points in fourth quarter 2019 as compared to the same quarter  of  previous  year. Overall 2019, this  index  registered  an  increase  of  6.4 per cent  to  128.9 points  as  compared  to  7.3 per cent  (121.1 points) in 2018.

The  main  contributors  to the increase of Services sector in the fourth quarter of 2019 were stimulated by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment and Business Services and Finance segment which posted an increase of  6.4 per cent, respectively. This is followed by Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment and Others Services segment which shows an increase of  6.5 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector went up  1.1 per cent to  132.0 points as compared to the previous quarter.

                                                           Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Volume  index  of  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade,  Food  &  Beverages  and  Accommodation  portrayed  an  increasing  trend of 6.4 per cent compared to the same quarter of 2018. The growth was driven by Food & Beverages sub-sector with  10.6 per cent and Accommodation sub-sector,  7.1 per cent. On a quarterly basis, seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment expanded by  0.6 per cent.

Business Services and Finance

Business Services and Finance segment surged  6.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of 2018. This  increase  was  primarily  reflected  by  the  positive  growth  in  Professional, Scientific & Technical  and  Administrative & Support  Services sub-sector  with 9.4 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Business Services and Finance segment grew by  1.4 per cent as against third quarter 2019.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Volume  index  of  Information  &  Communication  and  Transportation  &  Storage  segment  recorded  a positive  growth  of 6.5 per cent as compared with the same quarter of previous year. The growth was contributed by Information & Communication sub-sector with  6.6 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment posted an increase of  1.7 per cent.

Other Services

Volume index of Other Services registered an increase of  6.5 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2018. This increase was led by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Personal Services & Other Activities sub-sector with  8.1 per cent. Meanwhile, seasonally adjusted volume index of Other Services segment went up by  1.7 per cent in fourth quarter 2019.
