Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Services grew by  6.5 per cent to 167.4 points in first quarter 2019 as compared to the same quarter of previous year.

The positive growth for the Services sector in the first quarter of 2019 was driven by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment; and Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment which both recorded the same growth (6.9%). Seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector rose by 1.1 per cent to 167.9 points as compared to the previous quarter.

Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

The segment of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation grew by  6.9 per cent as compared with the same quarter of 2018. This growth was boosted by Food & Beverages sub-sector,  10.0 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment increased by  0.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Finance, Real Estate and Professional

Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment expanded by  5.3 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2018. This increase was underpinned by the Professional sub-sector at  10.6 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment went up by  2.3 per cent as against fourth quarter 2018.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Volume index of Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment experienced an increase of  6.9 per cent as  compared  with  the  same   quarter  of  previous  year. The  main contributor  to  the  increase  was  Information  &  Communication  sub-sector  with  7.4 per cent. Meanwhile, the seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  in  this  segment  edged  up  by 1.4 per cent.

Other Services

Other Services segment increased marginally to 6.4 per cent as compared to the first quarter of 2018. This increased was stimulated by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector at  9.5 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Other Services segment expanded by 1.7 per cent in first quarter 2019.
