Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Services registered a growth of  7.2 per cent to 167.7 points in fourth quarter 2018 as compared to the same quarter of previous year. Overall 2018, this index registered an increase of  7.2 per cent to 162.2 points as compared  6.7 per cent (151.3 points) in 2017.

The main contributors to the increase in the services sector in fourth quarter 2018 were Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment  (8.3%) and Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment (7.4%). Seasonally  adjusted volume index of  this sector went up by 1.5 per cent to 166.3 points as compared to the previous quarter.

Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

The volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation registered a growth of  8.3 per cent as compared with the same quarter of 2017. This increase was induced by Food & Beverages at  9.9 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment edged up by 1.7 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Finance, Real Estate and Professional

The segment of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment rose by  5.2 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2017. This increase was driven by the growth in Professional sub-sector at  11.2 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment increase by 1.2 per cent as against third quarter 2018.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Momentum of Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment remained resilient by posting a growth of 7.4 per cent as compared with the same quarter of previous year. This growth was due to the increase in Information & Communication sub-sector with  8.2 per cent. On a quarterly basis, seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment expanded by 1.3 per cent.

Other Services

As compared to the fourth quarter of 2017, Other Services segment grew by  6.4 per cent. The main contributor to the increase was Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector at  8.9 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Other Services segment went up by 1.4 per cent as against third quarter 2018.
