Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Services recorded a growth of  7.0 per cent to 157.3 points in first quarter 2018 as compared to the same quarter previous year.

The momentum of this increase was driven by segment of Finance, Real Estate and Professional  (7.7%) and Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage  (7.2%). The  seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  of  this  sector  increased  by  1.8 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

                           Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

The segment of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation increase by  6.7 per cent as compared with the same quarter of 2017. This increase was stimulated by Food & Beverages sub-sector, 7.4 per cent. The seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment grew by  1.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Finance, Real Estate and Professional

The volume index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment went up by  7.7 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2017. This increase was driven by the growth of Professional sub-sector, 10.9 per cent. As compared to previous quarter, the seasonally adjusted volume index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment edged up by  2.2 per cent.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

An increase of  7.2 per cent was registered in Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment as compared with the same quarter of previous year. This growth was spurred by Information & Communication sub-sector,  8.4 per cent. On a quarterly basis, the seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment rose by  2.5 per cent.

Other Services

Other Services  segment went up by  6.4 per cent as compared to the first quarter of 2017. This  increase  was  primarily reflected by the positive growth in Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Private Health sub-sectors,  7.2 per cent and  6.5 per cent respectively. As  compared  to previous quarter, the seasonally adjusted volume index of Other Services segment increased by  1.9 per cent.
