Statistics are an important element in national development as every figure and data produced reflect the realities of society and serve as the basis for planning, policy formulation and decision-making. Quality, accurate and reliable statistics enable the Government to understand the needs of the people, identify current challenges and formulate appropriate interventions to ensure that national development is implemented in an inclusive and sustainable manner, with the well-being of the people at its core.

In this regard, National Statistics Day (HSN), which is celebrated on 20 October every year, serves as a platform to raise public awareness and understanding of the importance of statistics in everyday life. In 2026, the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) continues the celebration of HSN through various Road to HSN 2026 programmes and activities involving government agencies, the private sector and educational institutions as part of efforts to strengthen statistical literacy and cultivate the use of data.

As the principal agency entrusted with the production of official statistics for the country, DOSM is committed to providing quality, reliable, relevant and timely statistics to support national planning and development. In line with technological advancements and the rapid growth of data, the ability of society to understand, interpret and use data responsibly has become increasingly important. Therefore, HSN 2026 also serves as a catalyst for efforts to strengthen the national statistical ecosystem and enhance public confidence in official statistics, in line with the Strengthening of the National Statistical System (PSSN).

The celebration of HSN 2026 also supports the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI in ensuring that national development is centred on well-being and sustainability, while remaining responsive to the needs of the people. Through the commitment and professionalism of DOSM personnel in producing quality and reliable statistics, statistics are not merely numbers, but a voice that reflects the realities of society and a guide in shaping a better future for the nation.
