Overview

Introduction

This report presents statistics on services sector which encompasses sub-sector of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from first quarter 2012 until third quarter 2017.

Performance of Services Sector, Third Quarter 2017

 

Performance of Services Sector

Revenue of services sector increased 9.3 per cent to RM387.8 billion in third quarter 2017 as compared to the same quarter 2016. The increase was contributed by Professional and Real Estate Agent segment (14.3%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation (9.3%). Total revenue on quarterly basis increased RM5.1 billion or 1.3 per cent.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 3.6 million persons, an increase of 84,053 persons or 2.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. However, on quarterly basis, number of persons engaged recorded a decline of 0.5 per cent (19,121 persons). In the third quarter 2017, salaries & wages paid was RM23.4 billion, an increase of 5.9 per cent as compared to the previous year and 0.7 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment registered a growth of 9.3 per cent to RM309.3 billion as compared to the same quarter 2016.  The increase was driven by Food & Beverages (10.2%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (9.4%). This segment recorded an increase of 1.8 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 2.1 per cent to 2.7 million persons as compared to the third quarter 2016. Salaries & wages paid grew 4.5 per cent to RM14.0 billion. However, quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged recorded negative growth 0.7 per cent or 18,289 persons, while salaries & wages paid increased 0.9 per cent.

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment posted an increase in total revenue to RM56.0 billion or 8.5 per cent as against the same quarter of the preceding year. This increased was propelled by Information & Communication (10.3%) sub-sector. However on  quarterly basis, the total revenue for this segment registered a decrease of 1.7 per cent.

The number of persons engaged for this segment increased 0.7 per cent to 464,075 persons year-on-year, whilst salaries & wages paid also grew to RM5.0 billion (5.7%). The number of persons engaged dropped 0.8 per cent while salaries & wages paid decreased marginally 0.05 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

 

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment recorded total revenue of RM15.0 billion, an increase of 8.7 per cent compared to RM13.8 billion in third quarter 2016. The growth of this segment was driven by Private Education (10.1%) and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (9.1%) sub-sector. Total revenue of this segment increased by 5.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Number of persons engaged increased by 3.3 per cent to 275,465 persons as compared to corresponding quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also grew 6.6 per cent to RM2.2 billion. On a quarterly basis, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid increased by 0.8 per cent and 2.2 per cent respectively.

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment rose 14.3 per cent to RM7.4 billion as against the same quarter of previous year. Professional  sub-sector showed an increase of 14.3 per cent. On quarterly basis, this segment decreased 3.2 per cent.

In third quarter 2017, number of persons engaged increased 180,215 persons or 10.2 per cent. Salaries & wages paid grew 16.2 per cent to RM2.2 billion as compared to the same period in the previous year. As compared to the preceding quarter, number of persons engaged rose 0.4 per cent, while salaries & wages paid registered negative growth 0.7 per cent.
