Performance of Services Sector
The index of Services expanded by 5.9 per cent in fourth quarter 2016 as compared to the same quarter a year earlier.
The increase was spearheaded by the segment of Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage (6.7%); Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation (6.3%); Other Services (6.1%) and Finance, Real Estate and Professional (4.6%). The seasonally adjusted index of Services went up by 2.3 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation
The segment of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation increased by 6.3 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2015. All sub-sectors contributed positively to the growth led by Food & Beverages, 7.5 per cent, Accommodation, 6.5 per cent and Wholesale & Retail Trade, 6.1 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index of this segment rose by 3.0 per cent as against the previous quarter.
Finance, Real Estate and Professional
The index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment registered a growth of 4.6 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter 2015. This increase was driven by Professional (10.3%); Real Estate (5.7%) and Finance & Insurance (3.4%) sub-sectors. Quarter-on-quarter, the seasonally adjusted index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment edged up by 0.8 per cent.
Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage
Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment grew by 6.7 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter 2015. This growth was underpinned by Information & Communication sub-sector, 7.8 per cent and Transportation & Storage, 5.1 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index of this segment increased by 2.6 per cent as compared to the preceding quarter.
Other Services
Year-on-year, the Other Services segment posted an increase of 6.1 per cent. This increase was led by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (7.6%); followed by Private Education (6.0%) and Private Health (4.9%) sub-sectors. In seasonally adjusted terms, Other Services segment increased by 1.7 per cent as against the third quarter 2016.
