Performance of Services Sector

The Index of  Services for first quarter of 2016 increased by 4.7 per cent as compared with the same quarter last year.

The positive growth was due to the increase in all segments which are Communication and Transport & Storage  (7.0%); Other Services (5.8%), Distributive Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation (5.0%) and Finance, Real Estate and Professional (2.0%). On a quarter-on-quarter seasonally adjusted, this sector rose by  1.5 per cent.

Distributive Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

The segment of Distributive Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation posted a positive growth of  5.0 per cent as compared with the same quarter of 2015. This increase was underpinned by sub-sectors of Accommodation, 5.7 per cent; followed by Distributive Trade, 5.1 per cent and Food & Beverages, 4.5 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index of this segment edged up by 1.1 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

 

Finance, Real Estate and Professional

In this quarter, Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment grew by 2.0 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2015. This increase was stimulated by the growth of Professional sub-sector, 9.1 per cent; Real Estate, 4.3 per cent and Finance & Insurance, 0.2 per cent. The seasonally  adjusted output  of  Finance, Real  Estate  and  Professional  segment  went  up  by  2.3 per cent as against the  fourth quarter of 2015.

 

Communication and Transport & Storage             

An increase of 7.0 per cent was recorded in Communication and Transport & Storage segment as compared to the first quarter of 2015 was led by the positive growth of  8.4 per cent in Information & Communication sub-sector and 4.8 per cent in Transportation & Storage sub-sector. On a quarterly basis, the seasonally adjusted index of Communication and Transport & Storage segment rose by 1.2 per cent.

 

Other Services

Momentum of Other Services segment remained resilient by posting a growth of  5.8 per cent as compared with the same quarter of previous year. This growth was spurred by Private Education,  6.9 per cent; Private Health,  5.9 per cent and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation, 4.6 per cent. The seasonally adjusted output in this segment increased by 2.0 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.
