INDEX OF SERVICES, THIRD QUARTER 2016

Performance of Services Sector

The index of Services in third quarter 2016 registered a growth   6.2 per cent as compared to the same quarter a year earlier.

The increase was contributed by  the segment of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation  (6.6%); Information & Communication and  Transportation & Storage  (6.4%); Other  Services  (6.1%) and Finance, Real  Estate and  Professional  (5.5%). The  seasonally adjusted  index of Services grew  by  2.0 per cent  as  compared  to  the  previous  quarter.

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

The segment of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation expanded by  6.6 per cent as compared with the same quarter 2015. This increase was underpinned by the following sub-sectors: Food & Beverages,  7.0 per cent; followed by Wholesale & Retail Trade, 6.6 per cent and Accommodation, 6.2 per cent. The seasonally adjusted index of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation rose by 1.5 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Finance, Real Estate and Professional

The index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment rose at a faster rate of  5.5 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter 2015. This increase was driven by the strong growth registered in the Professional sub-sector  (10.1%); Real Estate (5.3%) and Finance & Insurance  (4.8%). Quarter-on-quarter, the seasonally adjusted index of Finance, Real Estate and Professional segment went up by  3.4 per cent.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment posted an increase of  6.4 per cent as compared to the third quarter 2015. This growth was spurred by the following sub-sectors: Information & Communication, 7.6 per cent and Transportation & Storage, 4.5 per cent. The seasonally adjusted output of this segment grew by 1.4 per cent as compared with the previous quarter.

Other Services

The  index  of  Other Services  increased  by  6.1 per cent  as  compared  with  the  same  quarter  2015. All  sub-sectors  recorded  positive  growth, namely  Private  Education  (6.6%); Arts,  Entertainment  &  Recreation  (6.2%)  and  Private  Health  (5.4%). In seasonally  adjusted  terms, Other  Services segment  increased  by  2.3 per cent  as  compared  to  the  second  quarter  2016.
