Introduction

This report presents statistics on services sector which encompasses sub-sector of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from first quarter 2012 until second quarter 2017. Principal statistics reported are total revenue/ sales value, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid. 

Performance of Services Sector, Second Quarter 2017

Performance of Services Sector

Revenue of services sector increased 9.6 per cent to RM383.5 billion in second quarter 2017 as compared to the same quarter 2016. The increase was contributed by Professional and Real Estate Agent (22.7%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation (9.6%). Total revenue on quarterly basis increased RM8.5 billion or 2.3 per cent.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector was 3.6 million persons, an increase of 120,155 persons or 3.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. On quarterly basis, number of persons engaged rose 40,157 persons (1.1%).

In the second quarter 2017, salaries & wages paid was RM23.2 billion, an increase of 5.4 per cent as compared to the previous year and 1.2 per cent quarter-on-quarter.

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation registered a growth of 9.6 per cent (RM303.8 billion) as compared to the same quarter 2016. The increase was driven by Food & Beverages (10.1%) and Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (9.7%). This segment recorded an increase of 1.9 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 3.7 per cent to 2.7 million persons as compared to the second quarter 2016. Salaries & wages paid grew 5.7 per cent to RM13.8 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid increased 1.2 per cent and 0.5 per cent respectively.

Information & Communication and Transport & Storage             

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage posted a total revenue of RM57.1 billion (8.5%) in second quarter 2017. The increase was contributed by Information & Communication sub-sector (10.3%). On quarterly basis, total revenue for this segment also registered an increase of 4.7 per cent.

Year-on-year, number of persons engaged for this segment recorded an increase of 0.2 per cent to 467,983 persons, whilst salaries & wages paid also grew to RM5.0 billion (1.1%). Number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid increased by 0.5 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively as compared to the previous quarter.

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

Total revenue for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation rose by 7.5 per cent or RM14.2 billion in this quarter as compared to the second quarter 2016. The growth of this segment was driven by Private Education (8.6%) followed by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (8.5%) sub-sector. On quarterly basis, total revenue decreased by 1.4 per cent.

Number of persons engaged increased by 2.1 per cent to 271,426 persons as compared to corresponding quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also grew 5.4 per cent to RM2.2 billion. On a quarterly basis, number of persons engaged increased 0.2 per cent while salaries & wages decreased 0.5 per cent.

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent rose 22.7 per cent to RM8.4 billion as against the same quarter of previous year. Professional sub-sector showed an increase of 24.0 per cent. On quarterly basis, this segment increased 6.0 per cent.

In second quarter 2017, number of persons engaged increased 180,189 persons or 11.0 per cent. Salaries & wages paid grew 14.3 per cent to RM2.2 billion as compared to the same period in the previous year. As compared to the preceding quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid rose 3.2 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively.
