Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Services portrayed an increasing trend of 6.4 per cent to 126.5 points in second quarter 2019 as compared to the same quarter of previous year.

The increase  of  Services  sector  in  the second quarter of 2019 was led by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, (6.6%) and Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment, (6.4%). Seasonally  adjusted  volume  index  of  this  sector  edged  up  by 1.2 per cent to 127.2 points as compared to the previous quarter.

                                                           Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Volume index of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment rose by  6.6 per cent as compared with the same quarter of 2018. The growth was contributed by Food & Beverages sub-sector, 10.0 per cent and Accommodation sub-sector, 6.8 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment went up by 2.6 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Business Services and Finance

Business Services and Finance segment registered an increase of  6.2 per cent as compared to the corresponding quarter of 2018. The growth was primarily reflected by Professional, Scientific & Technical  and Administrative & Support Services sub-sector at 9.5 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Business Services and Finance segment decreased by  1.5 per cent as against first quarter 2019.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

The  segment  of  Information  &  Communication  and  Transportation  &  Storage  segment  registered  a  positive  growth  of  6.4 per cent  as  compared  with the  same  quarter  of  previous year. This  increase  was  stimulated  by  Transportation & Storage sub-sector with 6.7 per cent. Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment grew by  1.8 per cent.

Other Services

Volume index of Other Services segment experienced an increase of  6.0 per cent as compared to the second quarter of 2018. This was induced  by the vigorous performance of Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Personal Services & Other Activities sub-sector at 7.4 per cent. Seasonally adjusted volume index of Other Services segment increased by  1.0 per cent in second quarter 2019.
