Introduction

This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from year 2012 until first quarter 2019.

 

Performance of Services Sector, First Quarter 2019

Overall Performance

Total revenue of Services sector in first quarter 2019 recorded RM431.2 billion, increased 7.0 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2018. The highest contribution was recorded by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (RM21.7 billion; +6.8%). Meanwhile, the total revenue on a quarterly basis contracted by RM1.8 billion or 0.4 per cent.

Total   number   of   persons   engaged   in   this   sector   amounted  to  3.7  million  persons, an  increase of  92,001 persons or 2.5 per cent  as  againts  to the same quarter of the previous year. Quarterly  basis indicated  that number  of persons engaged  recorded a decrease  of 1,283 persons or 0.03 per cent.

In first quarter 2019, salaries & wages paid was RM24.6 billion, an increase of 3.8 per cent as compared to the previous year, while quarter on quarter was declined 0.7 per cent.

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total  revenue  for  Wholesale & Retail  Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation  segment  recorded  a positive  growth  of  6.8 per cent to RM341.9 billion year-on-year. The robust growth was contributed by Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (+RM19.8 billion,+6.6%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded a negative growth of  0.2 per cent.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 2.9 per cent to 2.8 million persons as compared to the first quarter 2018. Salaries  &  wages  paid  grew   3.6 per cent to RM14.7 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged recorded a decrease of 0.2 per cent, whilst salaries & wages paid showed a marginal growth of 0.1 per cent.

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communications  and  Transportation & Storage segment recorded an  increase  in  revenue  to RM63.1 billion  or  7.4  per cent   as   compared  to   the   first   quarter  of  2018. The   increase   was   driven   by   Information & Communication  sub-sector  with 7.9 per cent (+RM2.5 billion). Meanwhile, revenue recorded a negative growth of 2.5 per cent for the quarterly comparisons.

Number  of  persons  engaged  for  this  segment  increased  0.9  per  cent  year-on-year  to  473,874  persons  and  the  amount  of salaries & wages  paid  also  grew  at 2.5 per cent to RM5.1 billion. In the mean time on quarterly basis, the number of employees increased 0.6 per cent.

 

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment increased 8.4 per cent to  RM16.9 billion as compared to RM15.6 billion in first quarter 2018. The growth was driven by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (10.0%) and followed by Education (8.1%). On a quarterly basis, the total revenue for this segment registered an increase of 3.9 per cent.

Number of persons engaged increased by 2.4 per cent to 283,405 persons as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also  increased  to RM2.4 billion (5.0%). Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged  recorded an  increase of 0.1 per cent, while salaries & wages paid increased by 3.8 per cent.

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment increased 9.7 per cent as against the same quarter of previous year. This rise was propelled by Professional sub-sector (+RM0.18 bilion, 9.9%), while for quarterly comparison, this segment decreased by 1.3 per cent.

In first quarter 2019, number of persons engaged increased to 177,926 persons or 1.3 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid grew 7.2 per cent to RM2.4 billion. The number of persons engaged rose 0.2 per cent, while salaries & wages paid recorded a growth of 0.3 per cent as compared to the preceding quarter.
