Introduction

This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from year 2012 until second quarter 2019.

 

Performance of Services Sector, Second Quarter 2019

 

Overall Performance

Total revenue of Services sector in second quarter 2019 recorded RM441.3 billion, increased 6.5 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2018. The highest contribution was registered by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (+RM20.9 billion; +6.4%). Meanwhile, the total revenue on a quarterly basis also increased by RM10.0 billion or 2.3 per cent.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector amounted to 3.8 million persons, an increase of 96,049 persons or 2.6 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Quarterly basis indicated that number of persons engaged also recorded an increase of 55,661 persons or 1.5 per cent.

In second quarter 2019, salaries & wages paid was RM25.2 billion, an increase of 4.4 per cent as against to the previous year, quarter on quarter was expanded 2.2 per cent.

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment recorded a positive growth of 6.4 per cent to RM349.3 billion year on year. The robust growth was contributed by Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (+RM18.9 billion,+6.1%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded a positive growth of 2.1 per cent.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 3.0 per cent to 2.8 million persons as compared to the second quarter 2018. Salaries & wages paid grew 4.2 per cent to RM14.9 billion. Quarter on quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid rose 1.7 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively.

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communications and Transportation & Storage segment recorded an increase in revenue to RM65.9 billion or 6.9 per cent as compared to the second quarter of 2018. The increase was driven by Information & Communication sub-sector with 6.8 per cent (+RM2.2 billion). Meanwhile, revenue recorded a positive growth of 4.5 per cent for the quarterly comparisons.

In terms of persons engaged, this segment registered 1.3 per cent year on year to 481,282 persons and the amount of salaries & wages paid grew at 3.4 per cent to RM5.3 billion. In the mean time on quarterly basis, the number of employees and the amount of salaries & wages paid increased 1.6 per cent and 4.4 per cent respectively.

 

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

Revenue for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment went up 6.5 per cent to RM16.4 billion as compared to RM15.4 billion in second quarter 2018. The growth was driven by Education (+8.3%) and followed by Health (+6.4%). On a quarterly basis, the total revenue for this segment registered a decrease of 3.2 per cent.

Number of persons engaged increased by 1.8 per cent to 282,899 persons as compared to the corresponding quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also rose to RM2.4 billion (+4.9%). Quarter on quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid decreased  0.2 per cent and 1.4 percent respectively.

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment increased 9.9 per cent as against the same quarter of previous year. This rise was propelled by Professional sub-sector (+RM0.8 bilion; +10.1%). For quarterly comparison, this segment increased by 3.6 per cent.

In second quarter 2019, number of persons engaged increased to 178,840 persons or 1.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid grew 7.5 per cent to RM2.5 billion. The number of persons engaged rose 0.6 per cent, while salaries & wages paid recorded a growth of 5.0 per cent as compared to the preceding quarter.
