Introduction

This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from year 2012 until third quarter 2019.

Performance of Services Sector, Third Quarter 2019

Overall Performance

Total revenue of Services sector in third quarter 2019 recorded RM449.7 billion, increased 6.2 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2018. The highest contribution was registered by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (+RM20.3 billion; +6.0%). Meanwhile,  the  total  revenue  on  a  quarterly  basis  also  increased  by  RM8.4  billion  or  1.9  per  cent.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector amounted to 3.8 million persons, an increase of 91,848 persons or 2.5 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Quarterly basis indicated that number of persons engaged also recorded an increase of 571 persons or 0.02 per cent.

In third quarter 2019, salaries & wages paid was RM25.4 billion, an increase of 4.1 per cent as against to the previous year, while quarter on quarter expanded 0.8 per cent.  

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total  revenue  for Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade, Food  &  Beverages  and  Accommodation  segment  recorded  a  positive  growth  of  6.0 per cent to RM358.6 billion year on year. The  growth  was  contributed  by  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  (+RM18.2 billion; +5.7%) and Food & Beverages sub-sector (+RM1.9 billion; +12.1%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded a positive growth of 2.6 per cent.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 2.9 per cent to 2.8 million persons as compared to the third quarter 2018. Salaries & wages paid grew 3.8 per cent to RM15.1 billion. Quarter on quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid rose 0.1 per cent and 1.0 per cent respectively.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communications and Transportation & Storage segment recorded an increase in revenue to RM64.5 billion or    6.6 per cent as compared to the third quarter of 2018. The increase was driven by Information & Communication sub-sector with 6.4 per cent (+RM2.1 billion). Meanwhile, revenue for the quarterly comparisons recorded a decrease of 2.1 per cent.

In terms of persons engaged, this segment registered 1.2 per cent increase year on year to  476,294 persons and the amount of salaries & wages paid grew 3.0 per cent to RM5.3 billion. In the mean time, on quarterly basis the number of employees and the amount of salaries & wages paid decreased 1.0 per cent and 0.4 per cent respectively.

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

A total of RM17.3 billion revenue was generated for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment in third quarter 2019 with year on year percentage change of 7.0 percent. The growth was underpinned by Education (+8.2%), Health (+6.7%) and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (+6.3%). This segment registered an increase of revenue 5.6 per cent on a quarterly basis.

In this quarter, number of persons engaged recorded 285,016 persons, rose 1.7 per cent as compared to a year ago. Salaries & wages paid also grew 4.8 per cent to RM2.4 billion. Quarter on quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid registered a positive growth of 0.7 per cent and 2.0 percent respectively.

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment increased 9.7 per cent as against the same quarter of previous year. This rise was propelled by Professional sub-sector  (+RM0.8 bilion; +9.9%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded a decline of 3.9 percent.

In third quarter 2019, number of persons engaged increased to 179,180 persons or 1.3 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid grew 7.4 per cent to RM2.6 billion. The number of persons engaged rose 0.2 per cent, while salaries & wages paid recorded a growth of 1.1 per cent as compared to the preceding quarter.
