Introduction

This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period from year 2012 until fourth quarter 2019.

Performance of Services Sector, Fourth Quarter 2019

Overall Performance

Total revenue of Services sector in fourth quarter 2019 recorded RM459.4 billion, increased 6.1 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2018. The highest contribution was registered by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (+RM19.8 billion; +5.8%). Meanwhile, the total revenue on a quarterly basis also increase by registering  RM9.7 billion or  2.2 per cent.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector amounted to 3.8 million persons, an increase of 96,752 persons or 2.6 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Quarterly basis indicated that number of persons engaged also recorded an increase of 41,710 persons or 1.1 per cent.

In  fourth  quarter  2019, salaries  &  wages  paid  was  RM25.8 billion, an increase  of  4.2  per cent  as  against  to  the  previous  year, while quarter-on-quarter expanded 1.9 per cent. 

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total  revenue  for  Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food  &  Beverages  and  Accommodation  segment  recorded   a   positive   growth  of  5.8  per cent   to  RM362.5 billion  year- on - year. The  growth  was  contributed  by  Wholesale  &  Retail  Trade  (+RM17.5 billion; +5.4%).  For quarterly comparison,  this segment  recorded a  positive  growth of 1.1 per cent.

Number of persons engaged in this segment increased 3.0 per cent to 2.9 million persons as compared to the fourth quarter 2018. Salaries & wages paid grew 3.9 per cent to RM15.3 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid rose 1.3 per cent and 1.4 per cent, respectively.

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information  &  Communications  and  Transportation  &  Storage  segment  recorded  an  increase  in revenue to RM69.1 billion or 6.8 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2018. The increase was driven by Information & Communication sub-sector with 6.9 per cent (+RM2.4 billion). Meanwhile, revenue for the quarterly comparisons recorded rose of 7.1 per cent.

In terms of persons engaged, this segment registered 1.2 per cent increase year-on-year to  477,056 persons and the amount of salaries & wages paid grew 3.1 per cent to RM5.5 billion. In the mean time, on quarterly basis the number of persons engaged and the amount of salaries & wages paid recorded increases of 0.2 per cent and 4.7 per cent, respectively.

 

 

Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

A total of RM17.5 billion revenue was generated for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment in fourth quarter 2019 with year-on-year percentage change of 7.2 per cent. The growth was underpinned by Education (+8.3%), Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (+6.9%) and Health (+6.6%). This segment registered an increase of revenue 0.8 per cent on a quarterly basis.

In  this  quarter, number of persons  engaged  recorded  288,223 persons, rose 1.8 per cent  as  compared to a year ago. Salaries & wages paid also grew 5.1 per cent to RM2.5 billion. Quarter-on-quarter, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid registered a positive growth of 1.1 per cent and 0.6 per cent, respectively.

 

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Total revenue for Professional and Real Estate Agent segment increased 9.8 per cent as against the same quarter of previous year. The rise was propelled by Professional sub-sector (+RM0.9 bilion; +10.0%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded an increase of 11.8 per cent.

In fourth quarter 2019, number of persons engaged increased to 179,913 persons or 1.3 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages  paid  grew  7.4  per cent  to  RM2.6 billion. The  number  of  persons  engaged  increased 0.4 per cent, while salaries & wages paid recorded a decrease of 0.9 per cent as compared to the preceding quarter.
