Overview

 

Volume Index of Services recorded 3.6 per cent increase in the first quarter 2022, with annual growth 7.1 per cent  

Performance of Services Sector

In   the  first  quarter  of  2022,  Volume  Index  of  Services  rose  by  7.1   per  cent  to  record 132.3 points as compared to 123.5 points in the first quarter 2021. This increase was driven by the positive growth of all four segments in the Services sector which were Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, 6.4 per cent, Business Services and Finance segment, 2.7 per cent,  Information  &  Communication  and     Transportation    &    Storage   segment,  12.4 per cent and Other Services segment, 15.0 per cent.

Similarly, Volume Index of Services also increased on a quarterly basis by 3.6 per cent to 132.3 points as compared to 127.7 points in the fourth quarter 2021.  This  increase  was  attributed  by  the  growth  of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, 2.3 per cent, Business Services and Finance segment, 5.6 per cent, Information & Communication and Transport & Storage segment, 4.0 per cent and Other Services segment, 4.4 per cent.

 Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector grew 6.4 per cent to 131.6 points in the first quarter 2022.

 

                                                           Performance by Segment

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Volume  index  of  Wholesale &  Retail  Trade,  Food & Beverages  and   Accommodation segment increased by 6.4 per cent to 131.3 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year. The Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector was the main contributor to the increase in this segment which registered 3.9 per cent growth. For quarterly comparison, this segment rose by 2.3 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

The seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment increased by 6.5 per cent to record 131.1 points over the previous quarter.

 

Business Services and Finance

In   the   first   quarter  of   2022,  the  Business  Services  and  Finance  segment  experienced  an  increase  of  2.7 per  cent to 131.1 points as compared to the same quarter last year. This increase was driven by Real Estate sub-sector and Professional, Scientific & Technical and Administrative & Support Services sub-sector  which grew 13.5 per cent and 7.6 per cent respectively. Meanwhile, on a quarterly basis, this segment registered an increase of  5.6 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, this segment rose by 6.4 per cent to 128.5 points in the first quarter of 2022 as compared to the previous quarter.

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment recorded an index volume of 143.6 points, an increase of 12.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of previous year. Transportation & Storage sub-sector was the main contributor to this increase which recorded a growth of 26.4 per cent. This segment also increased by 4.0 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.

At the same time, the seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment also increased by 5.1 per cent to reach 143.9 points as compared to the previous quarter.

 

Other Services

Volume index of Other Services soared by 15.0 per cent to 104.3 points as compared to the same quarter of 2021. The Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Personal Services & Other Activities sub-sector was the main contributor to this increase with a growth of 33.1 per cent, followed by Health sub-sector, 13.2 per cent and Education sub-sector, 3.0 per cent. For quarterly comparison, this segment increased by 4.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2022.

The seasonally adjusted volume index for Other Services segment also soared by 12.2 per cent to record 105.0 points as compared to the fourth quarter of 2021.
