Volume Index of Services recorded 3.0 per cent increase in the fourth quarter 2021, with annual growth of 1.6 per cent

Performance of Services Sector

Volume  Index of  Services  experienced a  increase  of 3.0 per cent to  record 127.7 points in   the  fourth  quarter   of 2021  as   compared to 124.0 points in the same quarter of previous year. This grow was attributed by Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment, 9.4 per cent and Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, 2.2 per cent. 

On a quarterly basis, Volume Index of Services expand by 12.0 per cent to 127.7 points as compared to 114.1 points in the third quarter of 2021. This increase was influenced by the positive growth on Other Services segment, 24.7 per cent, Wholesale & Retail Trade,  Food  &  Beverages  and Accommodation  segment,  17.9 per cent,  Information  &  Communication  and  Transportation  &  Storage segment,  7.9 per cent,  and  Business  Services  and  Finance  segment,  4.4 per cent.

Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector increase by 2.3 per cent to 115.7 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year as a consequence of the surge in Other Services segment, 21.5 per cent.

                                                           Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Volume index of  Wholesale &  Retail  Trade,  Food &  Beverages  and  Accommodation  segment  swelled  by  2.2 per cent  to  128.4 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year. The Accommodation sub-sector was the main contributor to the increase in this segment which registered 46.6 per cent. For quarterly comparison, this segment increase by 172.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment fell by 2.2 per cent to record 105.3 points over the previous quarter.

Business Services and Finance

In the fourth quarter of 2021, the Business Services and Finance segment experienced  a decrease of  0.1 per cent to 124.6 points  as  compared  to  the  same  quarter  last  year. This  decline  was  caused  by  Administrative  &  Support  Services  sub-sector, 6.2 per cent  and  Finance and Insurance sub-sector, 3.8 per cent. Meanwhile, on a quarterly basis,  this  segment  registered  an  increase  of  4.4 per cent when compared to the third quarter of 2021.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, this segment rose by 1.4 per cent to 120.4 points in the fourth quarter of 2021. 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment recorded an index volume of 138.1 points, an increase by 9.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter of previous year. The Transportation & Storage sub-sector was the contributor to this increase and recorded 12.3 per cent. This segment also increased by 7.9 per cent as compared to the third quarter of 2021.

At the same time, the seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment also rose by 7.8 per cent to reach 137.3 points as compared to the previous quarter. 

Other Services

Volume index of Other Services segment decreased by 0.5 per cent to 99.8 points as compared to the same quarter of 2020. This was affected by the positive growth of Private Health sub-sector, 9.5 per cent and Arts, Entertainment and Recreation sub-sector, 5.0 per cent. For quarterly comparison, this segment rose 24.7per cent in the fourth quarter of 2021.

Seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment showed a corresponding grow of 21.5 per cent to 95.4 points as compared to the third quarter of 2021.
