Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Service experienced a fall of 0.3 per cent and recorded 123.4 points in the first quarter of 2021 as compared to 123.8 points in the previous quarter.

The decline of the Services sector in the first quarter of 2021 was due to Others Services segment, negative 9.5 per cent and Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, negative 1.5 per cent. For year-on-year comparison, Volume Index of Services also recorded a decrease of 3.6 per cent  to 123.4 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector recorded a growth of 2.3 per cent to 123.7 points as compared to the previous quarter. Business Services and Finance segment were the major contributors with a growth of  5.3 per cent.

 

                                                           Performance by Segment

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Volume  index  of  Wholesale   &  Retail  Trade, Food  &  Beverages  and  Accommodation  segment  declined  1.5  per  cent  to 123.3 points as compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. Accommodation sub-sector and Food & Beverages sub-sector were the main contributor to the declined in this segment with registered negative 8.8 per cent and negative 1.7 per cent respectively. For annual comparison, this segment declined 3.8 per cent  as compared to the same quarter of 2020.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment increased 1.2 per cent to recorded 123.6 points over the previous quarter.

 

Business Services and Finance

Business Services and Finance segment increased 2.2 per cent to 127.5 points as compared to the previous quarter. This increase was led by Finance & Insurance sub-sector, 4.4 per cent. Meanwhile, for annual comparison, this segment registered a growth of 0.2 per cent compared to the same quarter a year earlier.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, this segment went up 5.3 per cent to 127.1 points in first quarter of 2021.

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Volume index of Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment increased 1.2 per cent after recording a growth of negative 1.5 per cent in fourth quarter 2020. This increase was driven by Information & Communication sub-sector which recorded a growth of 3.3 per cent. However, this segment dropped 2.0 per cent as compared to the same quarter of 2020.

Seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment also rose by 2.0 per cent to reached 128.4 points as compared to the previous quarter.

 

Other Services

In  first  quarter  of  2021, Others Services segment deteriorated to 9.5 per cent over the previous quarter. This growth was primarily reflected by the decline of Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Personal Services & Other Activities sub-sector, negative 19.0 per cent. Year-on-year, this segment went down to recorded negative 25.2 per cent in first quarter 2021.

Seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment dropped 3.8 per cent to 92.6 points as compared to the fourth quarter of 2020.
