Overview
Revenue for Services sector in the third quarter 2021 registered RM391.0 billion, declined 8.7 per cent
Introduction
This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period of 2012 until third quarter 2021.
Performance of Services Sector, Third Quarter 2021
Overall Performance
Total revenue of Services sector in third quarter 2021 recorded RM391.0 billion, decreased 8.7 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2020. This negative growth was contributed by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (-RM32.9 billion; -9.5%). Meanwhile, total revenue on a quarterly basis registered a negative growth of 3.3 per cent or RM13.5 billion.
Total number of persons engaged in this sector amounted to 3.7 million persons, decreased 32,334 persons or –0.9 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Quarterly basis indicated that number of persons rose 1.0 per cent or increased 34,663 persons.
In this quarter, salaries & wages paid amounted to RM24.1 billion, a decrease of 2.6 per cent as against the previous year, while quarter-on-quarter basis it went up 1.8 per cent.
Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation
Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment declined -9.5 per cent to RM313.3 billion as compared to the third quarter of 2020. The fall was contributed by Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (-RM30.2 billion; -9.1%), Food & Beverages (-RM1.9 billion; -14.0%) and Accommodation (-RM0.8 billion; -52.9%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, this segment declined 3.5 per cent.
Number of persons engaged in this segment declined 0.3 per cent to 2.8 million persons as compared to the third quarter of last year. Salaries & wages paid drop 0.6 per cent to RM14.9 billion. For quarter-on-quarter comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid grew 1.4 per cent and 3.0 per cent respectively.
Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage
Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment recorded a fall in revenue to RM59.2 billion or -1.1 per cent as compared to the third quarter of 2020. The decrease was driven by Transportation & Storage (-RM3.0 billion; -12.3%). Meanwhile, for quarterly comparison, revenue close up by 0.5 per cent.
Number of persons engaged for this segment dropped 2.0 per cent to record 451,917 persons as compared to the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also dropped 7.8 per cent to RM4.4 billion. Meanwhile, for comparison by quarter, number of persons engaged recorded positive growth of 0.1 per cent while salaries & wages paid increased 1.6 per cent.
Private Health, Private Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation
A total of RM10.9 billion revenue was generated for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment in the third quarter of 2021 with 21.4 per cent decrease as compared to the third quarter of 2020. The decline was contributed by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector (-RM3.0 billion; -80.6%) and Private Education sub-sector (-RM0.3 billion; -5.5%). Meanwhile, this segment also registered a decrease in revenue of 10.5 per cent on quarterly comparison.
In this quarter, number of persons engaged recorded 273,914 persons, dropped 3.1 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid also recorded negative growth of 2.7 per cent to RM2.4 billion. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid decreased 0.9 per cent and 0.3 per cent respectively.
Professional and Real Estate Agent
Professional and Real Estate Agent segment recorded a decrease in revenue to RM7.5 billion or -11.1 per cent against the same quarter of 2020. The decline was driven by Professional sub-sector (-RM0.8 billion; -10.4%) and Real Estate Agent (-RM0.1 billion; -19.4%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded negative growth of 8.6 per cent.
In the third quarter 2021, the number of persons engaged recorded was 172,818 persons or decreased by 3.0 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid declined 4.2 per cent to RM2.4 billion. For the quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages recorded negative growth of 1.2 per cent and 2.9 per cent respectively.
