Volume Index of Services experienced a decrease of -7.5 per cent in third quarter 2021

Performance of Services Sector

Volume Index of Services experienced a decrease of -7.5 per cent to record 114.2 points in the third quarter of 2021 as compared to 123.4 points in the same quarter of previous year. This fall was attributed by the drop in Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, -12.1 per cent, Other Services segment, -21.4 per cent and Business Services and Finance segment, -3.5 per cent.

On a quarterly basis, Volume Index of Services contracted by -2.2 per cent to 114.2 points as compared to 116.8 points in the second quarter of 2021. This decrease was influenced by the negative growth of Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, -4.1 per cent, Other Services segment, -10.0 per cent and Business Services and Finance segment, -0.9 per cent.

 Meanwhile, the seasonally adjusted volume index of this sector dropped by -5.4 per cent to 113.6 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year as a consequence of the decline in Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment, -7.5 per cent.

                                                           Performance by Segment

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Volume  index  of  Wholesale &  Retail  Trade,  Food &  Beverages and  Accommodation segment dropped by -12.1 per cent to 108.8 points as compared to the same quarter of previous year. The Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector was the main contributor to the decrease in this segment which registered -11.3 per cent. For quarterly comparison, this segment declined by -4.1 per cent as compared to the previous quarter.

Seasonally adjusted volume index of this segment fell by -7.5 per cent to record 108.4 points over the previous quarter.

Business Services and Finance

In the third quarter of 2021, the Business Services and Finance segment experienced a decrease of -3.5 per cent to 119.3 points as compared to the same quarter last year.

This  fall  was  caused  by  the  drop in and  Professional,  Scientific  & Technical  and Administrative  &  Support      Services   sub-sector, -15.4 per cent and Real Estate sub-sector, -17.1 per cent. Meanwhile, on  a  quarterly  basis, this  segment registered a   decrease of -0.9 per cent when compared to the second quarter of 2021.

As for seasonally adjusted volume index, this segment fell by –5.4 per cent to 118.7 points in the third quarter of 2021.

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage             

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment recorded an index volume of 128.5 points, an increase by 0.2 per cent as compared to the same quarter of previous year. The Information & Communication sub-sector was the contributor to this increase which recorded 6.0 per cent. This segment also increased by 1.1 per cent as compared to the second quarter of 2021.

At the same time, the seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment also rose by 0.1 per cent to reach 127.8 points as compared to the previous quarter.

Other Services

Volume index of Other Services segment decreased by -21.4 per cent to 79.9 points as compared to the same quarter of 2020. This fall was affected by the negative growth of Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector, -66.0 per cent  and  Private  Education sub-sector, -7.0 per cent. For quarterly comparison, this segment dropped -10.0 per cent in the third quarter of 2021.

Seasonally adjusted volume index in this segment showed a corresponding drop. It fell by -14.0 per cent to 78.5 points as compared to the second quarter of 2021.
