Revenue for Services sector in the fourth quarter 2021 expand 5.3 per cent recorded RM460.0 billion with
annual amounting to RM1.7 trillion

 

Introduction

This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period of  2012 until fourth quarter 2021.

Performance of Services Sector, Fourth Quarter 2021

Overall Performance

Total revenue of Services sector recorded RM460.0 billion in fourth quarter 2021, registered positive growth of 5.3 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2020. The increment was  fueled by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment  (+RM17.9 billion; 5.1%). Meanwhile, total revenue on a quarterly basis registered a growth of 17.7 per cent or RM69.0 billion.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector amounted to 3.7 million persons, rose 52,077 persons or 1.4 per cent as against the corresponding period of the previous year. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged went up 1.9  per  cent  or  increased  71,021 persons.

Salaries & wages paid in fourth quarter 2021 posted a growth of 1.2 per cent to reach RM25.0 billion as compared to the same month a year ago. Compared with third quarter 2021, salaries & wages paid increased 3.8 per cent.

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment increased 5.1 per cent to RM370.1 billion as compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. This was contributed by Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (+RM17.1 billion; 5.1%), Food & Beverages (+RM0.1 billion; 1.1%) and Accommodation (+RM0.6 billion; 52.0%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, this segment increased 18.1 per cent.

Number of persons engaged in this segment grew 1.5 per cent to 2.8 million persons as compared to the fourth quarter of last year. Salaries & wages paid inclined 2.7 per cent to RM15.4 billion. For quarter-on-quarter comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid grew 1.7 per cent and 3.7 per cent respectively.

 

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage segment recorded an increase in revenue to RM67.0 billion or  8.2 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter of 2020. The increase was driven by Transportation & Storage (RM3.8 billion; 16.3%). Meanwhile, for quarterly comparison, revenue increase by 13.1 per cent.

Number of persons engaged for this segment also increase 4.1 per cent to record 471,075 persons as compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, salaries & wages paid dropped 1.2 per cent to RM4.7 billion. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged recorded positive growth of 4.2 per cent while salaries & wages paid increased 5.8 per cent.

 

Private Health, Private Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

A total of RM14.3 billion revenue was generated for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment in the fourth  quarter  of  2021  with  6.5  per cent  increase as compared  to  the  fourth  quarter  of  2020.  This  increase  was  contributed  by Private Health  (RM0.6 billion; 11.8%) and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation sub-sector (RM0.2 billion; 5.6%). Meanwhile, this segment also registered an increase in revenue of 31.2 per cent on quarterly comparison.

In this quarter, number of persons engaged recorded 276,926 persons, dropped 2.0 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid recorded positive growth of 0.3 per cent to RM2.4 billion. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid inreased 1.0 per cent and 1.6 per cent respectively.

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Professional and Real Estate Agent segment recorded revenue of RM8.6 billion or –6.9 per cent against the same quarter of 2020. The negative growth was driven by Professional  sub-sector (-RM0.6 billion; -6.5%) and Real Estate Agent (-RM0.1 billion; -13.3%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded an  increase of  14.1 per cent.

In the fourth quarter 2021, the number of persons engaged recorded was 174,309 persons or decreased by 2.0 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid declined 2.1 per cent to RM2.4 billion. For the quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages recorded positive growth of 0.8 per cent and 2.6 per cent respectively.
