Revenue for Services sector in first quarter 2022 soared 10.4 per cent exceeded pre-pandemic level

to record RM473.0 billion

Introduction

This publication presents statistics on Services sector which encompasses the sub-sectors of Wholesale & Retail Trade; Information & Communication; Transportation & Storage; Food & Beverages; Professional; Private Health; Private Education; Accommodation; Arts, Entertainment & Recreation and Real Estate Agent for the period of  2012 until first quarter 2022.

Performance of Services Sector, First Quarter 2022

Overall Performance

Total revenue of Services sector recorded RM473.0 billion in first quarter 2022, registered positive growth of 10.4 per cent as compared to the same quarter 2021. The increment was  fueled by Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment (RM32.0 bilion; 9.2%).  Meanwhile,  total revenue  on  a  quarterly   basis   registered  a  growth of    2.8 per cent or RM12.9 billion.

Total number of persons engaged in this sector amounted to 3.8 million persons, rose 99.5 thousand persons or 2.7 per cent as against the corresponding period of the previous year. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged went up 1.0 per cent or increased 36.6 thousand persons.

Salaries & wages paid in first quarter 2022 posted a growth of 5.0 per cent to reach RM25.4 billion as compared to the same quarter a year ago. Compared with fourth quarter 2021, salaries & wages paid increased 1.8 per cent.

 

Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation

Total revenue for Wholesale & Retail Trade, Food & Beverages and Accommodation segment increased 9.2 per cent to RM378.7 billion as compared to the first quarter of 2021. This was contributed by Wholesale & Retail Trade sub-sector (RM28.5 billion; 8.6%), Food & Beverages (RM2.6 billion; 19.9%) and Accommodation (RM1.0 billion; 86.1%). For quarter-on-quarter comparison, this segment increased 2.3 per cent. 

Number of persons engaged in this segment grew 2.7 per cent to 2.8 million persons as compared to the same quarter of last year. Salaries & wages paid inclined 5.3 per cent to RM15.6 billion. For quarter-on-quarter comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages paid grew  0.9 per cent and 1.5 per cent respectively

  

 

Information & Communication and Transportation & Storage

Information & Communication  and  Transportation & Storage  segment  recorded an increase in  revenue  to  RM69.5  billion or  16.1 per cent as compared to the first quarter of 2021.  The  increase  was driven by Transportation & Storage (RM7.1 billion; 32.2%). Meanwhile, for quarterly comparison, revenue increase by 3.7 per cent.

Number of persons engaged for this segment also increase 6.5 per cent to record 481,995 persons as compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, salaries & wages paid rose 8.5 per cent to  RM4.8 billion. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged recorded positive growth of 2.3 per cent while salaries & wages paid increased 2.5 per cent.

 

Private Health, Private Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation

A  total of RM15.2 billion revenue was generated for Health, Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation segment in the  first  quarter  of  2022  with  17.3 per cent increase as compared to the first quarter of 2021. This increase was contributed by Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (RM1.5 billion; 51.7%) and Private Health sub-sector (RM0.7 billion; 13.7%). Meanwhile, this segment also registered an increase in revenue of 6.0 per cent on quarterly comparison.


In this quarter, number of persons engaged recorded 276,849 persons, dropped 0.8 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid recorded positive growth of 1.6 per cent to RM2.5 billion. For quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged decreased 0.03 per cent while salaries & wages paid inreased 1.9 per cent.

 

Professional and Real Estate Agent

Professional and Real Estate Agent segment recorded revenue of RM9.7 billion or 7.7 per cent against the same quarter of 2021. The positive growth was driven by Professional sub-sector (RM0.7 billion; 8.1%) and Real Estate Agent (RM5.6 million; 1.0%). For quarterly comparison, this segment recorded an increase of  12.6 per cent.

In the first quarter 2022, the number of persons engaged recorded was 175,213 persons or negative 1.2 per cent as compared to the same quarter of the previous year. Salaries & wages paid increased 0.5 per cent to RM2.5 billion. For the quarterly comparison, number of persons engaged and salaries & wages recorded positive growth of 0.5 per cent and 2.5 per cent respectively.
