Introduction

This report presents the quarterly employment statistics from the perspective of labour demand. The statistics is based on the Quarterly Employment Survey encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services in the formal private establishments. The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are jobs (positions), filled positions, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and category of skill.

Labour Demand, Second Quarter 2019

In Q2 2019, total positions in the private sector was 8,619 thousand, increased 145 thousand as against the same quarter of preceding year. The rate of filled positions was 97.5 per cent (8,401 thousand) while number of vacancies was 218 thousand with a rate of 2.5 per cent. In the meantime, a total of 27 thousand jobs were created in this quarter.

Labour Demand by Skill

In terms of skill, positions were largely recorded in semi-skilled category with a share of 62.3 per cent. A total of 24.4 per cent of positions were in the skilled category while low-skilled was 13.3 per cent.

As filled positions made up more than 97 per cent of total positions, the composition by skill category was similar. Semi-skilled category comprised of 62.4 per cent, followed by skilled category (24.4%) and low-skilled category (13.2%).

The highest share of vacancies in Q2 2019 was in semi-skilled categories at 56.1 per cent and followed by skilled category (25.2%). In the meantime, low-skilled category represented 18.7 per cent.

Number of jobs created in Q2 2019 was largely for semi-skilled category with a share of 48.5 per cent. This was followed by skilled category which represented 44.7 per cent and low-skilled category (6.8%).

Labour Demand by Economic Activity

In Q2 2019, Services sector remained as the largest contributor in positions and filled position with a percentage share of 51.6 per cent and 52.5 per cent respectively. Manufacturing sector recorded the second highest share at 26.3 per cent of positions and 25.6 per cent of filled positions.

On the contrary, the largest share of vacancies was posted by Manufacturing sector at 55.6 per cent, followed by Services (20.1%). Agriculture sector ranked third with a share of 13.9 per cent followed by Construction and Mining & Quarrying sectors which recorded a contribution of 10.2 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively.

During this quarter, 50.4 per cent of jobs created were in Services sector followed by Construction sector with 20.8 per cent and Manufacturing sector with 19.6 per cent.
