Overview

Introduction

This report presents the quarterly employment statistics from the perspective of labour demand. The statistics is based on the Quarterly Employment Survey encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services in formal private establishments. The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are positions, filled positions, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and category of skill.

Labour Demand, Fourth Quarter 2018

The number of positions offered by the private sector in the fourth quarter of 2018 was 8.54 million, increased 61 thousand against 8.48 million in Q4 2017. Filled positions which comprised of 97.7 per cent of total positions went up 70 thousand to 8.35 million (Q4 2017: 8.28 million). In the meantime, vacancies which accounted for 2.3 per cent of total positions was 198 thousand (Q4 2017: 206 thousand) while jobs created in this quarter was 24 thousand (Q4 2017: 30 thousand).

Labour Demand by Skill

In terms of share across skill categories, 2.08 million positions or 24.4 per cent were in the skilled category (Q4 2017: 24.2%). Semi-skilled category recorded 5.31 million with a share of 62.2 per cent (Q4 2017: 62.1%) while low-skilled accounted for 1.15 million positions or 13.4 per cent (Q4 2017: 13.6%).

Since filled positions made up most of the positions, the composition across skill was almost similar. Semi-skilled category sustained the largest share of filled positions, posted 5.20 million or 62.4 per cent as against 62.3 per cent in Q4 2017. The skilled category contributed 2.03 million or 24.4 per cent (Q4 2017: 24.2%) while low-skilled category recorded 1.11 million or 13.3 per cent (Q4 2017: 13.5%).

In this quarter, vacancies in semi-skilled category accounted for 108 thousand or 54.9 per cent (Q4 2017: 53.8%). In the meantime, skilled category was 47 thousand, with a share of 23.9 per cent (Q4 2017: 25.3%) while low-skilled category posted 42 thousand or 21.2 per cent (Q4 2017: 20.9%).

Jobs created in Q4 2018 was largely contributed by semi-skilled category at 49.2 per cent (12 thousand) and followed by skilled category which comprised of 45.2 per cent (11 thousand). The number of jobs created for the low-skilled category in this quarter was 5.6 per cent (1.3 thousand).

Labour Demand by Economic Activity

In the fourth quarter of 2018, Services sector remained as the largest contributor in positions and filled positions with a percentage share of 51.8 per cent and  2.5 per cent respectively. This is followed by Manufacturing sector which accounted for 26.3 per cent (positions) and 25.5 per cent (filled positions).

Meanwhile, Manufacturing sector recorded the largest share of vacancies at 57.0 per cent, followed by Services (18.9%). Construction sector ranked third with a share of 10.8 per cent followed by Agriculture and Mining & Quarrying sectors which recorded a contribution of 13.1 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively.

Jobs created were mainly contributed by Services sector (49.8%) and Construction sector (23.9%) while Manufacturing sector registered a share of 15.1 per cent.
