Introduction
This report presents the quarterly employment statistics from the perspective of labour demand. The statistics is based on the Quarterly Employment Survey encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services in the formal private establishments. The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are number of employees demanded by the industries (positions), filled positions, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and skill for the period of the first quarter of 2015 to the second quarter of 2018.
Labour Demand for the Second Quarter of 2018
The number of labour demand in the private sector grew 0.3 per cent year-on-year to 8,474 thousand (Q2 2017: 8,449 thousand). Filled positions recorded a growth of 0.6 per cent to 8,274 thousand (Q2 2017: 8,224 thousand) while vacancies stood at 200 thousand (Q2 2017: 224 thousand). Jobs created was 27 thousand, lower than the number registered in the same quarter of the preceding year.
Labour Demand by skill
The positions in the skilled category represented 24.3 per cent or 2,059 thousand in the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2017: 2,033 thousand). The semi-skilled category accounted for 62.2 per cent or 5,275 thousand (Q2 2017: 5,251 thousand) while low-skilled category recorded a share of 13.5 per cent or 1,140 thousand positions (Q2 2017: 1,164 thousand).
Filled positions in the skilled category posted 24.3 per cent or 2,009 thousand (Q2 2017: 1,981 thousand). The semi-skilled category contributed 62.4 per cent or 5,167 thousand of the total filled positions (Q2 2017: 5,124 thousand), followed by low-skilled category with a share of 13.3 per cent or 1,098 thousand (Q2 2017: 1,119 thousand).
Vacancies in the skilled category was 25.3 per cent or 51 thousand (Q2 2017: 52 thousand) while the semi-skilled category registered 53.8 per cent or 108 thousand (Q2 2017: 127 thousand). A total of 20.9 per cent or 42 thousand vacancies in the low-skilled category were recorded during this quarter (Q2 2017: 45 thousand).
Jobs created in the skilled category represented 47.3 per cent or 13 thousand in the second quarter of 2018 (Q2 2017: 19 thousand). Meanwhile, the semi-skilled category registered 49.0 per cent, with a total of around 13 thousand (Q2 2017: 20 thousand) followed by low-skilled category which recorded 3.7 per cent or one thousand (Q2 2017: 1.5 thousand).
Labour Demand by Economic Activity
Positions and filled positions in the second quarter of 2018 recorded the highest contribution in the Services sector at 51.6 per cent and 52.4 per cent respectively, followed by Manufacturing sector with 26.2 per cent of positions and 25.5 per cent of filled positions. Construction sector represented 15.5 per cent of positions and 15.6 per cent of filled positions. The lowest share of positions and filled positions were in the Mining & Quarrying sector (1.0%). Meanwhile, the highest vacancies was in the Manufacturing sector (54.0%), followed by Services (20.2%), Agriculture (14.7%), Construction (10.9%) and Mining & Quarrying (0.2%). Nevertheless, Services sector registered the highest jobs created (50.6%), followed Manufacturing (20.3%), Construction (18.8%), Agriculture (9.4%) and Mining & Quarrying (0.9%).
