Overview

Introduction

This report presents the quarterly employment statistics from the perspective of labour demand. The statistics is based on the Quarterly Employment Survey encompassing major economic activities namely Agriculture, Mining & Quarrying, Manufacturing, Construction and Services in the formal private establishments. The principal statistics of employment presented in this report are jobs (positions), filled positions, vacancies and jobs created by economic activity and category of skill.

Labour Demand, First Quarter 2019

In Q1 2019, the number of positions in the private sector went up by 82 thousand to 8,549 thousand (Q1 2018: 8,468 thousand). The rate of filled positions was 97.7 per cent (Q1 2018:  97.6%) while vacancies registered 201 thousand with the rate of 2.3 per cent (Q1 2018: 2.4%). Jobs created in this quarter was 23 thousand (Q1 2018: 29 thousand).

Labour Demand by Skill

In terms of the distribution of positions by skill, semi-skilled category dominated with a share of 62.3 per cent or 5,328 thousand (Q1 2018: 62.2%). The share of positions in the skilled category remained at 24.3 per cent with 2,080 thousand, while low-skilled category recorded 1,141 thousand or 13.4 per cent (Q1 2018: 13.5%).

Both skilled as well as semi-skilled categories recorded the vacancies rate of 2.2 per cent and low-skilled category was 3.4 per cent. Vacancies was the highest in the semi-skilled category with 57.6 per cent or 116 thousand (Q1 2018: 54.3%). In the meantime, skilled category posted 47 thousand, with a share of 23.3 per cent (Q1 2018: 25.0%) while low-skilled category recorded 38 thousand or 19.1 per cent (Q1 2018: 20.8%).

Jobs created in Q1 2019 was largely attributed by semi-skilled category at 49.1 per cent (Q1 2018: 48.8%), followed by skilled category with 44.9 per cent (Q1 2018: 44.1%). Jobs created in Q1 2019 was attributed by semi-skilled category at 49.1 per cent (12 thousand), followed by skilled category which accounted for 44.9 per cent (11 thousand). The number of jobs created for the low-skilled category in this quarter was 6.0 per cent (1.4 thousand).

Labour Demand by Economic Activity

In Q1 2019, Services sector sustained the largest share of positions and filled position with a percentage share of 51.9 per cent and 52.6 per cent respectively. This was followed by Manufacturing sector, which represented 26.2 per cent of positions and 25.5 per cent filled positions.

Meanwhile, vacancies by the Manufacturing sector registered the highest share with 54.3 per cent, followed by Services (21.3%) and Agriculture (14.3%). Construction and Mining & Quarrying sectors recorded contributions of 9.9 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively.

Jobs created were largely attributed by Services sector (52.2%). Construction sector and Manufacturing sector registered a share of 20.2 per cent and 17.5 per cent respectively.
