Overview
INTRODUCTION
This publication presents statistics on Services sector which obtained from the Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. The main statistics such as the value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned are also presented in this publication.
PERFORMANCE OF SERVICES SECTORS
Services sector recorded gross output value of RM1,111.8 billion in 2017 as compared to RM964.7 billion in 2015, translating into an average annual growth rate of 7.4 per cent. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM68.8 billion to record RM515.2 billion, with annual growth of 7.4 per cent and thus resulting a value added of RM596.6 billion for the year of 2017.
The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 3.8 per cent to 5,168,613 persons as compared to 4,795,721 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM152.2 billion compared to RM131.5 billion in 2015 and value of fixed assets amounted to RM1,015.7 billion.
VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT
The main contributor for value of gross output was Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector which amounted to RM353.8 billion with share of 31.8 per cent. This was followed by Information & communication sub-sector of RM144.8 billion (13.0%) and Finance with RM138.0 billion (12.4%). These three sub-sectors contributed 57.2 per cent to the value of gross output of Services sector.
VALUE ADDED
In 2017, Services sector recorded a value added of RM596.6 billion with annual growth rate of 7.3 per cent compared to RM518.3 billion in 2015. Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest value added amounted to RM212.2 billion (35.5%). This was followed by Finance sub-sector of RM86.3 billion (14.5%) and Information & communication with RM74.3 billion (12.5%).
NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND CATEGORY OF WORKERS
Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector registered the highest number of persons engaged of 1,864,900 persons or 36.0 per cent in 2017. The second highest contributor was Food & beverage sub-sector with 958,803 persons or 18.6 per cent followed by Transportation & storage with 437,926 persons or 8.5 per cent. These three sub-sectors contributed 63.2 per cent to the total number of persons engaged in the Services sector.
Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 4,137,419 persons with share of 80.0 per cent, as against working proprietors and unpaid family workers (821,160 persons; 15.9%) and paid part-time employees (210,034 persons; 4.1%). Based on the total number of full-time employees, clerical and related occupations was the largest group of number of persons engaged (1,804,012 persons; 43.6%), followed by elementary occupation (949,249 persons; 22.9%) and manager, professional & researcher (897,709 persons; 21.7%).
SALARIES & WAGES
The total salaries & wages paid in Services sector for the year of 2017 amounted to RM152.2 billion. Wholesale & retail trade sub-sector recorded the highest salaries & wages of RM48.9 billion or 32.1 per cent of the total salaries & wages paid. The second highest contributor was Finance with RM19.8 billion or 13.0 per cent followed by Transportation & storage with RM16.2 billion or 10.7 per cent. Collectively, the share of salaries & wages to Services sector for all three sub-sectors were RM84.9 billion (55.8%).
