INTRODUCTION
This publication presents statistics on the information and communication services which obtained from the Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. Information and communication services comprises activity of publishing; motion picture, video and television programme production, sound recording and music publishing; programming and broadcasting; telecommunications services; computer programming, consultancy & related activities and information services. The main statistics such as the value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned is also presented in this publication.
PERFORMANCE OF INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION SERVICES
The information and communication services recorded gross output value of RM144.8 billion in 2017 compared to RM124.6 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 7.8 per cent per annum. In line with the rapid growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM8.4 billion to record RM70.4 billion with the average annual growth rate of 6.5 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM74.3 billion for the year 2017.
VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT
In the period of 2015 to 2017, the gross output value of information and communication services increased 7.8 per cent per annum. Telecommunications services was the largest contributor of gross output value with RM87.4 billion (60.4%) in Annual Economic Survey 2018. The second largest contributor was computer programming, consultancy and related activities with RM35.1 billion (24.2%) followed by programming and broadcasting with RM7.7 billion (5.3%).
VALUE ADDED
The total value added recorded in information and communication services for 2017 is RM74.3 billion with annual growth rate of 9.0 per cent per annum within the period of two years. The telecommunications services recorded the highest value added in 2017 which amounted to RM49.5 billion (2015: RM38.3 billion). This was followed by the computer programming, consultancy and related activities of RM14.4 billion (2015: RM14.3 billion) and programming and broadcasting of RM3.2 billion (2015: RM3.0 billion).
NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED
The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 5.4 per cent to 225,665 persons as compared to 203,017 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM13.8 billion compared to RM11.7 billion in 2015. Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 223,122 persons with percentage share of 98.9 per cent, as against to paid part-time employees (1,852 persons; 0.8%) and working owners & unpaid family workers (691 persons; 0.3%).
