Overview
PERFORMANCE OF MANUFACTURING SUB-SECTOR
Petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products sub-sector was the highest contributor to the gross output of the manufacturing sector in 2014 with a value of RM307.0 billion (30.4%). This was followed by the electrical, electronic and optical products sub-sector which accounted for RM232.2 billion (23.0%). These two sub-sectors contributed 53.4 per cent of total manufacturing output. However, in terms of number of persons engaged, these two sub-sectors recorded 40.8 per cent of employees as against 59.2 per cent by other sub-sectors (Table A).
Meanwhile, beverages and tobacco products sub-sector recorded the lowest gross output with RM9.7 billion (1.0%) and number of persons engaged was 16,266 persons (0.8%).
Petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products sub-sector also recorded the highest value of fixed assets of RM74.9 billion (31.2%) followed by the electrical, electronic and optical products sub-sector RM48.2 billion (20.1%) and non-metallic mineral products, basic metal and fabricated metal products sub-sector RM37.9 billion (15.8%). These three sub-sectors also contributed RM37.5 billion (61.5%) to total salaries & wages in manufacturing sector.
GROSS OUTPUT BY MANUFACTURING INDUSTRY GROUP
Manufacture of refined petroleum products, manufacture of vegetable & animal oils and fats as well as manufacture of electronic components and boards were the largest contributors to the gross output in manufacturing sector for 2014. All these three groups accounted for RM388.5 billion (38.4%) to total gross output.
Other major contributors were the manufacture of basic chemicals, fertilizers and nitrogen compounds, plastics & synthetic rubber in primary forms as well as manufacture of rubber products which recorded a gross output of RM62.6 billion (6.2%) and RM36.3 billion (3.6%) respectively as shown in Table B.

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED BY CATEGORY OF WORKERS AND SEX
The manufacturing sector employed 2,096,197 persons in 2014. Paid full-time employees accounted for 2,053,765 persons (98.0%) of total number of persons engaged. Meanwhile, paid part-time, working proprietors, active business partners and unpaid family workers were 42,432 persons (2.0%) as depicted in Table C.
Male workers dominated this sector with 1,403,478 persons (67.0%) as compared to female workers with 692,719 persons (33.0 %) as shown in Chart 1.
SALARIES & WAGES OF PAID FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES BY CATEGORY OF OCCUPATION
The plant & machine operators and assemblers1 posted the highest salaries & wages paid amounting to RM27.4 billion (45.1%) with number of employees of 1,423,337 (69.3%). Meanwhile, the category of managers, professionals and executives recorded salaries & wages of RM18.5 billion (30.3%) with 187,092 persons employed (9.1%). This category of workers also earned the highest average salaries & wages per annum of RM98,685 followed by technicians and associate professionals of RM44,537 per annum (Table D).

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED AND AVERAGE SALARIES & WAGES BY GROUP
Manufacture of refined petroleum products recorded the highest average salaries & wages at RM7,245 with a total of 14,664 paid employees (0.7%). This was followed by installation of industrial machinery and equipment of RM5,266 with the number of paid employees of 1,571 (0.1%).
Manufacture of tobacco products registered the third-highest in terms of average salaries & wages RM4,661 with 2,572 paid employees (0.1%).
Meanwhile, other manufacturing groups which comprises of 60 groups recorded 1,738,937 persons engaged (84.1%) with an average salaries & wages of RM2,254 per month (Table E).
