Overview

 

SERVICES PRODUCER PRICE INDEX (2010=100)
THIRD QUARTER 2018

The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) is designed to measure the average changes  in the prices of services charged by the local services industry in Malaysia and used as a deflator in the compilation of Index of Services and Gross Domestic Product.

SPPI for the third quarter of 2018 registered an increase of 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. The main sub-sectors that registered increases were Education and Arts, Entertainment & Recreation grew 0.5 per cent respectively, Health and Real Estate Activities both rose 0.2 per cent and Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities (+0.1%). Meanwhile, Transportation, Professional and Information & Communication sectors remain unchanged.

The year-on-year comparison for SPPI recorded an increase of 0.7 per cent. The positive growth was contributed by sub-sectors Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities (+2.2%), Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (+1.8%), Real Estate Activities (+1.4%), Education (+1.1%), Professional  (+0.7%), Health and Information & Communication (+0.4%) and Transportation (+0.3%).

 

TRANSPORTATION

The SPPI for Transportation[1] for third quarter 2018 remain unchanged as compared to the previous quarter. However, the index which recorded increases were Postal Activities 1.0 per cent and  Courier Activities 0.2 per cent.  Conversely, the index decreased for Sea & Coastal Water Transport  (-0.3%) and  Passenger Air Transport (-0.2%). 

The year-on-year comparison showed an increase of 0.3 per cent contributed by Postal Activities (+0.8%), Passenger Air Transport (+0.7%) and Courier Activities  (+0.2%). 
 

ACCOMMODATION & FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICE ACTIVITIES

As compared to the previous quarter, the SPPI for Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities[2] rose 0.1 per cent in the third quarter 2018. The increase was contributed by the Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (+0.2%) and Short-term  Accommodation Activities (+0.1%). Meanwhile, the index for Event Catering and other Food Service Activities decreased 0.1 per cent and Beverage Serving Activities remain unchanged. 

The increase of 2.2 per cent for year-on-year comparison was driven by Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (+2.7%), Beverage Serving Activities (+2.1%) and Event Catering and other Food Service Activities (+0.2%). Meanwhile, the index declined for Short-term Accommodation Activities (-0.2%).

 

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

In third quarter 2018, the SPPI for Information & Communication[3] remain unchanged as the previous quarter. Year-on-year, SPPI for Information & Communication increased 0.4 per cent due to the sector of  Computer Programming, Consultancy & Related Activities (+0.6%). Meanwhile, the following indices declined:  Data Processing, Hosting and Related Activities; Web Portals (-0.4%), Wired Telecommunications Activities (-0.2%) and Wireless Telecommunications Activities (-0.1%).

 

REAL ESTATE ACTIVITIES

The SPPI for Real Estate Activities[4] grew 0.2 per cent in the third quarter 2018 as compared to the second quarter, 2018. The increase was led by Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract  Basis of 0.3 per cent.

Year on year basis, the index recorded an increase of 1.4 per cent and the increase was contributed by Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract Basis  (+0.5%).

 

PROFESSIONAL

The SPPI for Professional[5] was unchanged in the third quarter 2018 as compared to the previous quarter. 

Year-on-year SPPI for Professional grew by 0.7 per cent driven by Legal Activities (+1.1%), Architectural & Engineering Activities & Related Technical Consultancy (+0.7%) and Accounting, Bookkeeping & Auditing Activities; Tax Consultancy (+0.5%). 

 

EDUCATION

SPPI for Education[6] increased by 0.5 per cent in the third quarter of 2018 as compared to the previous quarter. The increase was contributed by the index of Higher Education (+0.8%).

Meanwhile, year-on-year comparison showed an increase of 1.1 per cent supported by Pre-Primary & Primary Education and Other Education rose 1.3 per  cent respectively, Secondary Education (+1.2%) and  Higher Education (+1.1%). 

 

HEALTH

The SPPI for Health[7] recorded an increase of 0.2 per cent for the third quarter of 2018 as compared to the second quarter of 2018.  The increase was contributed by Hospital Activities (+0.2%) and Medical & Dental Practice Activities (+0.1%). Meanwhile, Other Human Health Activities remain unchanged.

The Year-on-year comparison showed the index rose 0.4 per cent and this was led by Medical & Dental Practice Activities (+0.9%), Other Human Health Activities (+0.8%) and Hospital Activities (+0.7%). 

 

ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION

In the third quarter of 2018, the SPPI for Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation[8] increased 0.5  per cent compared  to the second quarter of 2018. This increase was due to Gambling and Betting Activities (+0.5%). In contrast, index for Other Amusement & Recreation Activities and Sports Activities decreased 0.1 per cent. 

Year-on-year, the growth of 1.8 per cent of SPPI for Arts, Entertainment and Recreation was contributed by Gambling and Betting Activities (+2.8%) and Other Amusement & Recreation Activities (+0.8%) whilst Sports Activities declined 0.2 per cent.
