Overview

 

SERVICES PRODUCER PRICE INDEX (2010=100) FOURTH QUARTER 2017

The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) is designed to measure the average changes  in the prices of services charged by the local services industry in Malaysia on a quarterly basis.


SPPI for the fourth quarter 2017 registered an increase of 0.4 per cent compared to the previous quarter. The sub-sectors that contributed positively to the growth were Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (1.0%), Accommodation and Food & Beverage Service Activities (0.8%), Transportation (0.3%), Professional (0.3%), and 0.1 per cent for Real Estate Activities and Health.


Year-on-year comparison for SPPI also showed an increase of 1.6 per cent. The following sub-sectors recorded positive growth namely Accommodation and Food & Beverage Service Activities (4.2%); Education (2.3%); Health (2.1%); Real Estate Activities (1.6%); Arts, Entertainment and Recreation (0.9%), Professional (0.6%); Transportation (0.4%) and Information & Communication (0.1%).

TRANSPORTATION

The SPPI for Transportation  for the fourth quarter 2017 rose 0.3 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. The increase was driven by the index of Passenger Air Transport  (0.6%) and Other Land Transport (0.2%).


The year-on-year comparison showed that the SPPI for Transportation registered an increase of 0.4 per cent, supported by Passenger  Air Transport  (1.0%), Courier Activities (0.7%) and Other Land Transport (0.4%).


ACCOMMODATION & FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICE ACTIVITIES

As compared to the previous quarter, the SPPI for Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities  increased 0.8 per cent in the fourth quarter 2017. The increases were driven by the Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (0.9%), Beverage Serving Activities (0.7%), Short-term Accommodation Activities (0.3%) and Event Catering & other Food Service Activities (0.2%).

The year on year growth of 4.2 per cent was driven by the increase in Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (5.0%), Beverage Services Activities (3.3%), Event Catering and other Food Service Activities (1.4%) and Short-term Accommodation Activities (1.3%).


INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION

Quarter on quarter, the SPPI for Information & Communication  was unchanged. Meanwhile, for year on year, the index increased 0.1 per cent due to inclined in the index of Computer Programming, Consultancy & Related Activities (0.4%) and Wireless Telecommunications Activities (0.1%). 

 

REAL ESTATE ACTIVITIES

The SPPI for Real Estate Activities  grew 0.1 per cent in the fourth quarter 2017 as compared to the third quarter, 2017 and 1.6 per cent year-on-year. 


PROFESSIONAL

The SPPI for Professional  recorded an increase of 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter 2017 as compared to the previous quarter. It was contributed by Legal Activities (0.8%), Architectural and Engineering Activities and Related Technical Consultancy (0.1%) and Accounting, Bookkeeping & Auditing Activities; Tax Consultancy for both are 0.1 per cent.


The year-on-year comparison also showed an increase of 0.6 per cent driven by Legal Activities (0.8%), Architectural & Engineering Activities & Related Technical Consultancy and Accounting, Bookkeeping & Auditing Activities; Tax Consultancy, 0.6 per cent respectively.


EDUCATION

The SPPI for Education  did not record any changes in the fourth quarter 2017 as compared to the third quarter 2017. Meanwhile, year-on-year comparison showed an increase of 2.3 percent supported by Secondary Education (6.1%), Pre-Primary & Primary Education (1.9%) Higher Education (1.8%) and Other Education (1.7%).


HEALTH

As compared to previous quarter, the SPPI for Health  registered a growth of 0.1 per cent in the fourth quarter 2017. The growth was propelled by the increases in the index of Other Human Health Activities (0.4%) and Medical & Dental Practice Activities (0.1%).

In the fourth quarter 2017, the index grew 2.1 per cent as compared to the fourth quarter 2016. This increase was led by Other Human Health Activities (2.5%), Hospital Activities (2.4%) and Medical & Dental Practice Activities (1.7%).


ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION

In the fourth quarter 2017, the SPPI for Arts, Entertainment and Recreation  rose 0.5 per cent as against the third quarter 2017 due to the increases in the index of Gambling and Betting Activities (1.1%), as well as Sports Activities and Other Amusement & Recreation Activities 0.1 per cent respectively.

The year-on-year for Arts, Entertainment and Recreation increase of 0.4 percent contributed by the index of Other Amusement & Recreation Activities (1.1%), Gambling and Betting Activities (0.9%), and Sports Activities (0.9%).

4 The industry covered is Activities of Real Estate Agents and Brokers for Buying, Selling and Renting of Real Estate

5 The industries covered are Legal Activities; Accounting, Bookkeeping and Auditing Activities; Tax Consultancy; and Engineering Services

6 The industries covered are Pre-primary Education (Private); Primary Education (Private); General School Secondary Education (Private); College and University Education (Private); Music and Dancing School; and Tuition Centre
