Overview
SERVICES PRODUCER PRICE INDEX (2010=100)
FOURTH QUARTER 2018
The Services Producer Price Index (SPPI) for the fourth quarter of 2018 increased 0.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter. The main sub-sectors that registered increases were Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities (+1.0%), Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (+0.4%), Education (+0.3%) and Real Estate Activities (+0.2%). Meanwhile, Transportation, Professional, Health and Information & Communication sub-sectors remain unchanged.
As compared to the previous year, the SPPI increased 0.6 per cent. The main contributions came from the increases in the index of Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities (+2.5%), Education (+1.4%), Arts, Entertainment & Recreation (+1.1%) and Real Estate Activities (+0.7%). Professional, Health and Information & Communication sub-sectors increased 0.4 per cent respectively, while Transportation sub-sector remain unchanged.
TRANSPORTATION
The SPPI for Transportation[1] was unchanged for the fourth quarter 2018 as compared to the previous quarter. However, the index increased 0.1 per cent for Other Land Transport and Passenger Air Transport. Meanwhile, index for Courier Activities and Sea & Coastal Water Transport decreased 0.2 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively while the index for Postal Activities and Freight Air Transport remained as previous quarter.
No changes were registered for year-on-year comparison of the SPPI for Transportation. The index for Postal Activities and Passenger Air Transport increased 0.8 per cent and 0.2 per cent respectively. Conversely, the index declined for Sea & Coastal Water Transport (-0.3%), Freight Air Transport (-0.2%), Other Land Transport (-0.2%) and Courier Activities (-0.1%).
ACCOMMODATION & FOOD AND BEVERAGE SERVICE ACTIVITIES
The SPPI for Accommodation & Food and Beverage Service Activities[2] rose 1.0 per cent for quarter on quarter comparison which was contributed by the Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (+1.2%), Beverage Serving Activities (+0.4%), Short-term Accommodation Activities (+0.3%) and Event Catering and Other Food Service Activities (+0.1%).
The increase of 2.5 per cent for year-on-year comparison was driven by Restaurants and Mobile Food Service Activities (+3.0%), Beverage Serving Activities (+1.8%) and Event Catering and Other Food Service Activities (+0.1%). Meanwhile, the index of Short-term Accommodation Activities decreased marginally by 0.3 per cent.
INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION
In the fourth quarter 2018, the SPPI for Information & Communication[3] was unchanged as compared to the previous quarter. Year-on-year comparison showed the SPPI for Information & Communication increased 0.4 per cent which was led by the sector of Computer Programming, Consultancy & Related Activities at 0.5 per cent. Meanwhile, the index of three groups declined namely Data Processing, Hosting and Related Activities; Web Portals (-0.4%), Wired Telecommunications Activities (-0.2%) and Wireless Telecommunications Activities (-0.1%).
REAL ESTATE ACTIVITIES
The SPPI for Real Estate Activities[4] grew 0.2 per cent in the fourth quarter 2018 as compared to the third quarter 2018. The increase was contributed by Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract Basis of 0.2 per cent. Year on year basis, the index increased 0.7 per cent and it was supported by Real Estate Activities on a Fee or Contract Basis (+0.7%).
PROFESSIONAL
No changes were registered for SPPI Professional[5] in the fourth quarter 2018 as compared to the previous quarter. However, Accounting, Bookkeeping & Auditing Activities; Tax Consultancy increased 0.1 per cent, while Legal Activities decreased 0.1 per cent. Index for Architectural & Engineering Activities & Related Technical Consultancy remain unchanged.
Year-on-year comparison for SPPI Professional grew by 0.4 per cent and it was driven by Architectural & Engineering Activities & Related Technical Consultancy (+0.6%), Accounting, Bookkeeping & Auditing Activities; Tax Consultancy (+0.4%) and Legal Activities (+0.2%).
EDUCATION
The SPPI for Education[6] increased 0.3 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018 as compared to the third quarter 2018. The increase was contributed by the index of Higher Education (+0.5%). Meanwhile, index for Secondary Education, Pre-Primary & Primary Education and Other Education remain unchanged.
Year-on-year comparison showed an increase of 1.4 per cent and it was supported by the index of Higher Education (+1.5%), Pre-Primary & Primary Education (+1.3%), Other Education (+1.3%) and Secondary Education (+1.2%).
HEALTH
The SPPI for Health[7] was unchanged for all groups in the fourth quarter of 2018 as compared to the third quarter of 2018.
For year-on-year comparison, the SPPI for Health increased 0.4 per cent. It was driven by the index of Medical & Dental Practice Activities (+0.9%), Hospital Activities (+0.7%) and Other Human Health Activities (+0.5%).
ARTS, ENTERTAINMENT AND RECREATION
The SPPI for Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation[8] increased 0.4 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2018 as compared to the previous quarter. The increase was due to Gambling and Betting Activities (+0.5%). In contrast, the Index of Sports Activities was unchanged, while Other Amusement & Recreation Activities decreased 0.1 per cent.
Year-on-year, the growth of 1.1 per cent of SPPI for Arts, Entertainment and Recreation was contributed by Gambling and Betting Activities (+2.1%) and Other Amusement & Recreation Activities (+0.6%). However, Sports Activities declined 0.3 per cent.
