Economic sectors spent 7.0 per cent higher for environmental protection in 2019

Industry players in Malaysia spent RM2.89 billion for environmental protection expenditure in 2019, 7.0 per cent higher than the amount spent in 2018. Operating expenditure constitutes the largest share at 70.3 per cent, while 29.7 per cent was spent on capital expenditure.

Pollution management dominated the environmental protection expenditure at RM2,021.2 million or 70.1 per cent. This was followed by waste management with RM751.7 million (26.1%) and environmental assessment and charges at  RM65.0 million (2.3%).

The manufacturing sector continues to dominate the environmental protection expenditure in 2019 with the value of RM2,181.3 million or 75.6 per cent. Meanwhile, services sector spent RM413.8 million (14.3%) and construction at RM161.2 million (5.6%).
