Overview

Performance of the construction sector

The total value of construction work done in the second quarter 2015 recorded a growth of 8.2 per cent year-on-year to RM27.2 billion. The quarter-on-quarter percentage change showed a decrease of 5.2 per cent as compared to the previous quarter as shown in Table A.
 

 

As illustrated in Chart A, the construction sector continued to record a positive growth since the second quarter of 2012.
 

 

Construction activity by type

In the second quarter of 2015, the highest percentage share was contributed by non-residential buildings sub-sector which recorded 34.6 per cent. This was followed by civil engineering sub-sector (30.4%), residential buildings (30.3%), and special trades (4.7%) as shown in Table B .

 

 

Value of construction work done by location of project

In the current quarter, Selangor continued to record the highest value of construction work done of RM6.61 billion or 24.3 per cent among the states. This was followed by Wilayah Persekutuan, RM5.16 billion (18.9%); Johor, RM5.03 billion (18.5%); Sarawak, RM2.28 billion (8.4%) and Pulau Pinang, RM1.47 billion (5.4%). The contribution of these five states accounted for 75.5 per cent of the total value of construction work done as shown in Chart B.

 

 

Construction by project owner

In terms of construction activity by project owner, private sector continued to dominatewith share of 66.9 per cent in the second quarter of 2015 as shown in Table C.
