Performance of the construction sector
The total value of construction work done in the first quarter 2015 recorded a growth of 15.1 per cent year-on-year to RM28.7 billion. The quarter-on-quarter percentage change showed an increase of 6.1 per cent as compared to the previous quarter as shown in Table A.
As illustrated in Chart A, the construction sector continued to record a positive growth since the first quarter of 2012 due to the expansion of the Malaysian economy.
Construction activity by type
In the first quarter of 2015, the highest percentage share was contributed by non-residential buildings sub-sector which recorded 34.8 per cent. This was followed by civil engineering sub-sector (30.5%), residential buildings (29.9%), and special trades (4.8%) as shown in Table B .
Value of construction work done by location of project
In the current quarter, Selangor continued to record the highest value of construction work done at RM7.55 billion or 26.9 per cent among the states. This was followed by Wilayah Persekutuan, RM5.14 billion (17.9%); Johor at RM4.79 billion (16.7%); Sarawak, RM2.21 billion (7.7%) and Pulau Pinang, RM1.60 billion (5.6%). The contribution of these five states accounted for 74.1 per cent of the total value of construction work done as shown in Chart B.
Construction by project owner
In terms of construction activity by project owner, private sector continued to dominate with a share of 68.4 per cent in the first quarter of 2015 as shown in Table C.
