The Export Unit Value Index increased by 1.8 per cent in May 2026, mainly contributed by an increase in the Mineral Fuels index
Exports
The export unit value index increased by 1.8 per cent in May 2026, attributed to increases in the index of mineral fuels (+5.6%), miscellaneous manufactured articles (+1.3%) and machinery & transport equipment (+0.5%). The export volume index decreased by 1.4 per cent in line with decreases in the indices of animal & vegetable oils & fats (-17.8%), manufactured goods (-15.6%) and mineral fuels (-11.3%). Seasonally adjusted export volume index decreased by 1.9 per cent from 217.4 points to 213.3 points.
Referring to the annual comparison, both the export unit value index and the volume index expanded by 9.5 per cent and 32.7 per cent respectively.
Imports
The import unit value index also decreased by 0.4 per cent in May 2026, due to decreases in the indices of mineral fuels (-1.9%), manufactured good (-0.2%) and machinery & transport equipment (-0.04%). Meanwhile, the import volume index decreased by 6.4 per cent in May 2026 as compared to the previous month, driven by decreases in the indices of mineral of fuels (-30.6%), chemicals (-11.8%) and manufactured goods (-8.8%). The seasonally adjusted import volume index decreased by 6.0 per cent from 185.8 points to 174.6 points.
A year-on-year comparison showed that the import unit value index increased by 6.2 per cent, while the volume index edged up by 7.4 per cent.
Terms of trade
Malaysia's terms of trade increased by 2.3 per cent month-on-month to 122.3 points in May 2026, due to an increase in the index of mineral fuels (+7.6%), animal & vegetable oils & fats (+2.0%) and miscellaneous manufactured articles (+1.5%). Meanwhile, Malaysia terms of trade increased by 3.2 per cent year-on-year from 118.6 points in May previous year.
