Overview
The Construction sector increase by 8.8 per cent to RM47.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026
The value of work done in the Construction sector amounted to RM47.8 billion in the second quarter of 2026, continued its steady growth of 8.8 per cent (Q1 2026: 8.5%). The performance was mainly driven by the continued expansion in the Special trade activities and Non-residential buildings sub-sectors, which recorded double-digit growth of 17.6 per cent and 13.3 per cent, respectively. The Residential buildings sub-sector also registered an increase of 8.7 per cent, followed by the Civil engineering sub-sector with a growth of 2.7 per cent.
The Civil engineering sub-sector was the main contributor to the total value of work done in this quarter, amounting to RM16.7 billion (share: 35.0%). The performance was driven by the Construction of utility projects (RM8.1 billion) and Construction of roads and railways (RM6.9 billion). Meanwhile, the value of work done for the Non-residential buildings and Residential buildings sub-sectors recorded RM14.0 billion (share: 29.3%) and RM10.9 billion (share: 22.8%), respectively. The Special trade activities sub-sector contributed RM6.2 billion (share:12.9%), supported by Sites preparation (RM1.5 billion), Plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation (RM1.3 billion) and Electrical installation (RM1.3 billion).
The private sector remained the primary driver of growth in this quarter, contributing RM31.4 billion, or 65.8 per cent of the total value of work done. The private sector sustained its double-digit growth momentum, registering 11.4 per cent growth (Q1 2026: 13.2%), driven by strong performance in the Special trade activities (20.2%) and Non-residential buildings (18.2%)sub-sectors. Meanwhile, the value of work done by the public sector increased by 4.1 per cent (Q1 2026: 0.5%) to RM16.4 billion, accounting for 34.2 per cent of the total value. This increase was primarily supported by the Special trade activities sub-sector (11.0%).
The performance of the Construction sector by state in the second quarter of 2026, nearly 65.8 per cent of the total work done value was concentrated in Selangor, Johor, Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan) and Sarawak. The value of work done in Selangor amounted to RM12.2 billion or 25.5 per cent, with the Non-residential buildings (RM4.8 billion) and Residential buildings (RM3.2 billion) sub-sectors contributing the most. Meanwhile, Johor was the second contributor with RM9.4 billion or 19.6 per cent, primarily supported by the Non-residential buildings sub-sector (RM3.5 billion). Whereas, the value of work done in Wilayah Persekutuan was RM5.2 billion (10.8%) and Sarawak recorded RM4.7 billion (9.9%).
Summarising the performance of the Construction sector for the first half of 2026, the value of work done reached RM94.3 billion, registering an 8.7 per cent increase compared with the same period in 2025. The growth was moderate compared with the 14.7 per cent recorded in the first half of 2025. The performance was supported by positive growth across all sub-sectors, particularly in Special trade activities (21.0%) and Non-residential buildings (13.0%).
