The Construction sector sustained its upward momentum with 8.5 per cent growth to RM46.5 billion
in the first quarter of 2026

The value of work done in the Construction sector continued its steady expansion in the first quarter of 2026, recording a growth of 8.5 per cent (Q4 2025: 10.3%). The performance was mainly driven by continued expansion in the Special trade activities and Non-residential buildings sub-sectors, which posted double digit growth of 24.6 per cent and 12.7 per cent, respectively. The Residential buildings sub-sector also registered an increase of 6.1 per cent. Meanwhile, the Civil engineering sub-sector remained positive with marginal growth of 1.5 per cent.

Of the RM46.5 billion value of work done recorded in the first quarter of 2026, RM15.9 billion or 34.2 per cent was contributed by the Civil engineering sub-sector, mainly driven by the Construction of utility projects (RM8.3 billion) and roads and railways (RM6.1 billion) activities. Meanwhile, the value of work done for the Non-residential buildings and Residential buildings sub-sectors amounted to RM13.9 billion (share: 29.9%) and RM10.5 billion (share: 22.5%), respectively. The Special trade activities sub-sector contributed RM6.2 billion (13.3%), largely supported by Site preparation (RM1.4 billion), while Plumbing, heat and air-conditioning installation and Electrical installation activities both recorded RM1.2 billion.

The private sector remained the main driver of growth in this quarter, with an increase of 13.2 per cent (Q4 2025: 8.6%) propelled by Special trade activities (28.8%) and Non-residential buildings (13.1%) sub-sectors. The value of work done by the private sector amounted to RM30.5 billion or 65.6 per cent of the total construction work done value. In contrast, the public sector contributed RM16.0 billion or 34.4 per cent of total work done, registering a growth of 0.5 per cent (Q4 2025: 13.4%). The growth was fueled by Special trade activities (15.0%) and Non-residential buildings (11.0%) sub-sectors, totalling RM1.7 billion and RM2.5 billion, respectively.

Construction sector by state showed that more than 50.0 per cent of the value of work done in the first quarter of 2026 was concentrated in Selangor, Johor and Wilayah Persekutuan (Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan). The value of work done in Selangor amounted to RM10.9 billion or 23.4 per cent, with the Non-residential buildings (RM4.1 billion) and Civil engineering (RM2.6 billion) sub-sectors contributing the most. Meanwhile, Johor ranked second with RM9.5 billion or 20.4 per cent, primarily supported by the Non-residential buildings sub-sector (RM3.6 billion). The value of work done in Wilayah Persekutuan stood at RM4.8 billion (10.3 per cent).
