INTRODUCTION

This publication presents statistics on administrative and support services which obtained from the Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. Administrative and support services comprise of rental & leasing activities; employment activities; travel agency, tour operator & reservation service activities; security & investigation activities; services to buildings & landscape activities and office administrative & other business support activities. The main statistics presented are the value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned.

PERFORMANCE OF ADMINISTRATIVE AND SUPPORT SERVICES

The administrative and support services recorded gross output value of RM33.4 billion in 2017 as compared to RM27.1 billion in 2015 with annual growth rate of 11.1 per cent. In line with the growth in the value of gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM3.7 billion to record RM20.3 billion with an annual growth rate of 10.8 per cent, thus resulting a value added of RM13.1 billion for the year 2017. The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 5.7 per cent to 194,008 persons as compared to 173,692 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM4.8 billion as compared to RM4.0 billion in 2015.

VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT

In the period of 2015 to 2017, the gross output value of administrative and support services increased 11.1 per cent per annum. Travel agency, tour operator & reservation service activities was the largest contributor of gross output value with RM17.0 billion (50.8%) in 2017. The other contributor was security & investigation activities with RM5.1 billion (15.3%), followed by rental & leasing activities with RM4.3 billion (12.9%) and services to buildings & landscape activities with RM3.0 billion (9.1%). These four activities contributed 88.1 per cent to the value of gross output in administrative and support services.Other contributed activities were office administrative & other business support activities and employment activities amounted to RM4.0 billion.

VALUE ADDED

The total value added recorded in administrative and support services for 2017 was RM13.1 billion with an annual growth rate of 11.6 per cent within the period of two years.Travel agency, tour operator & reservation service activities recorded the highest value added in 2017 which amounted to RM3.7 billion (2015: RM2.7 billion). This was followed by security & investigation activities, RM3.0 billion (2015: RM2.4 billion) and rental & leasing activities,RM2.5 billion (2015: RM2.2 billion). In comparison, travel agency, tour operator & reservation service activities posted the highest value added increase of RM1.0 billion with an annual growth rate of 18.3 per cent for the period of 2015 to 2017.

NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED

Security & investigation activities registered the highest number of persons engaged of 60,848 persons or 31.4 per cent (2015: 30.6%). The second highest contributor was services to buildings & landscape activities with 46,247 persons or 23.8 per cent (2015: 24.1%), followed by travel agency, tour operator & reservation service activities with 32,696 persons or 16.9 per cent (2015: 16.6%). These three activities contributed more than half (72.1%) to the total number of persons engaged in administrative and support services in 2017.
