Malaysia’s
Direct Investment Abroad (DIA) recorded a lower net outflow amounting to RM12.4 billion in 2025, compared with RM35.5
billion in the preceding year. Despite the moderation, Malaysian companies
operating abroad continued to generate substantial earning, amounting to RM39.9
billion (2024: RM45.4 billion). Meanwhile, the overall DIA position stood at
RM589.3 billion as at the end of 2025, lower than RM622.1 billion recorded a
year earlier.
Looking into the key sectors contributing to Malaysia’s
DIA net outflows, Services sector became the largest contributor with RM15.6 billion, primarily concentrated in Financial and insurance/takaful
activities. The outflows were also contributed by Construction and Mining &
quarrying sectors with RM3.0 billion and RM2.0 billion, respectively.
In term of investment income, the Services sector preceded
with the highest returns, amounting to RM25.3 billion. This was followed by
the Mining & quarrying sector at RM7.8 billion and Agriculture sector with
an income of RM2.9 billion.
The services sector also accounted for the largest share of Malaysia’s
cumulative DIA position, with a total value of RM440.2 billion as at the end of
2025 (2024: RM463.7 billion), largely fuelled by investments in Financial and
insurance/takaful activities. The Mining & quarrying and Agriculture sectors
followed with RM68.9 billion and RM44.0 billion, respectively.
In terms of region, Africa emerged as the largest destination for Malaysia’s DIA flows
in 2025, recording RM7.0 billion, notably to Mauritius and Angola. As at the
end of 2025, the Asian region maintained as Malaysia’s preferred investment
destination, with DIA position of RM339.0 billion.
