Overview

Average Price of Selected Building Materials

  • The the average price per unit of cement has increased by 2.7 per cent as compared to the same month last year (March 2023: RM22.41 per 50 kg bag). 
  • Similarly, a monthly comparison showed that the average price of cement (Ordinary Portland) recorded a slight increase (0.2%) with an average price of RM23.01 per 50 kg bag as compared to February 2024 (RM22.97 per 50 kg bag).
  • The average price per unit of steel, consisting of mild steel round bars and Mycon 60 high tensile deformed bars was RM3,683.51 per metric tonne, recording a slight increase of 0.1 per cent as compared to the previous month (February 2024: RM3,679.54 per metric tonne).

The Unit Price Index of Building Materials

  • A month-on-month comparison of construction materials and areas showed the unit price index remained unchanged for selected material such steel & metal sections, plywood, bricks & wall and roofing materials for most areas of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
  • The monthly comparison of cement showed that the unit price index remained unchanged for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in March 2024. However, there was a slight decrease for these materials price index in Terengganu & Kelantan (-0.3%). The unit price index of steel also remained unchanged for most areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in March 2024 as compared to February 2024. However, there was a slight increase for the Kota Kinabalu area (0.2%) and Sandakan (1.1%).
  • An annual comparison for the period of March 2023 and March 2024 showed that the unit price index of cement increased between 0.9 per cent to 7.7 per cent for all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. However, a slight decrease was recorded in the unit price index of these materials in Kota Kinabalu (-0.7%) and Kuching (-0.1%).
  • An annual comparison for price index per unit of steel showed a decrease between negative 0.8 per cent to negative 4.9 per cent for March 2024 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. However, only Johor recorded an increase in the price index per unit of steel (2.1%).
