The Unit Price Index of Building Materials
  • The unit price index of steel recorded an increase between 0.4 per cent to 3.3 per cent for almost all areas in January 2024 as compared to the previous month. The highest increase in the unit price of steel were in Perak (3.3%), and followed by Pahang (0.8%), Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis and Kuching (0.6% respectively).
  • A month-on-month comparison of selected construction materials and areas showed the unit price index remained unchanged for selected material such as plywood, plumbing materials and paints for most areas of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
  • The unit price index for steel and metal sections remained unchanged for most areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak, while there was a slight decrease in the price index of this material for Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis (-0.8%), Johor (-0.3%), Kota Kinabalu (-0.1%) and Sandakan (-2.2%). Nevertheless, a slight increase was registered in the price index of this material in Perak (0.9%) and Kuching (0.2%).
  • The monthly comparison also showed that the unit price index for cement remained unchanged for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in January 2024. There was a slight increase in the unit price index for this material for a few areas, namely in Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis (0.8%) and followed by Terengganu & Kelantan (0.5%).
  • An annual comparison for the period of January 2023 and January 2024 showed that the unit price index of cement recorded an increase between 0.7 per cent to 12.0 per cent for all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak.

Average Price of Selected Building Materials
  • The average price per unit of steel, consisting of mild steel round bars and Mycon 60 high tensile deformed bars was RM3,664.51 per metric tonne, recording a slight increase of 1.0 per cent as compared to the previous month (December 2023: RM3,629.77 per metric tonne). 
  • The average price of cement (Ordinary Portland) recorded a slight decrease of 0.1 per cent with an average price of RM22.97 per 50 kg bag as compared to December 2023 (RM23.00 per 50 kg bag).
