Overview

The Unit Price Index of Building Materials

  • The unit price index of steel between negative 0.3 per cent to negative 1.4 per cent for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in August 2024 as compared to the previous month. The highest decrease was in Terengganu & Kelantan (-1.4%), followed by Miri (-1.1%) and Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan (-0.7%).
  • The unit price index of cement recorded an increase between 0.3 per cent to 1.6 per cent for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. The highest increase was in Johor (1.6%), followed by Pahang (0.5%) and Terengganu & Kelantan (0.3%).
  • Meanwhile, the unit price index of sand recorded an increase between 1.3 per cent to 17.2 per cent for several areas in Peninsular Malaysia in August 2024 as compared to the previous month. The highest increase was in Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis (17.2%), followed by Johor (8.6%) and Pahang (6.2%).
  • An annual comparison for the period of August 2023 and August 2024 showed that the unit price index of cement increased between 0.2 per cent to 3.5 per cent for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. The highest increase was recorded in Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan (3.5%), followed by Pahang (2.7%) and Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis (2.3%).
  • Nevertheless, an annual comparison of the unit price index of steel recorded a decrease between negative 0.6 per cent to negative 4.2 per cent in August 2024 as compared to the same month last year for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. 


Average Price of Selected Building Materials

  • The average price of cement (Ordinary Portland) recorded a marginal increase (0.6%) with an average price of RM23.33 per 50 kg bag as compared to July 2024 (RM23.20 per 50 kg bag).
  • The average price per unit of steel, consisting of mild steel round bars and Mycon 60 high tensile deformed bars recorded a decrease (-0.6%) with an average price of RM3,705.37 per metric tonne as compared to the previous month (July 2024: RM3,726.37 per metric tonne).
