Overview

The Unit Price Index of Building Materials

  • The unit price index of sand recorded an increase between 0.2 per cent to 2.6 per cent for almost all areas in April 2024 as compared to the previous month. 
  • The highest increase were in Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis (2.6%), followed by Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan (1.2%) and Terengganu & Kelantan (0.9%). The unit price index of aggregates also recorded a slight increase between 0.1 per cent to 0.8 per cent for all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.
  • The monthly comparison of steel showed that the unit price index remained unchanged for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. There was a slight decrease for these materials price index in Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan (-0.5%) and Tawau (-0.4%). Meanwhile, there was a slight increase in price index of steel ini Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis dan Kota Kinabalu (0.5 per cent respectively).
  • The monthly comparison of cement showed that the unit price index remained unchanged for almost all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak in April 2024. However, there was a slight increase for these materials price index in Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan (1.9%).
  • An annual comparison for the period of April 2023 and April 2024 showed that the unit price index of cement increased between 1.9 per cent to 7.1 per cent for all areas in Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak. The highest increase were in Pulau Pinang, Kedah & Perlis (7.1%), followed by Terengganu & Kelantan (5.7%), Selangor, W.P. Kuala Lumpur, Melaka & Negeri Sembilan (4.4%) and Tawau (2.2%). 


Average Price of Selected Building Materials

  • The average price per unit of cement remained unchanged as compared to March 2024 with an average of price RM23.01 per 50 kg bag.
  • The average price per unit of steel, consisting of mild steel round bars and Mycon 60 high tensile deformed bars was RM3,702.88 per metric tonne, recording a slight increase (0.5%) as compared to the previous month (March 2024: RM3,683.51 per metric tonne).
