INTRODUCTION
This publication presents statistics on the health and social work services which obtained from the Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. Health and social work services comprise of hospital activities; medical and dental practice activities; other human health activities; residential care activities and social work activities without accommodation. The main statistics such as the value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned is also presented in this publication.
PERFORMANCE OF HEALTH AND SOCIAL WORK SERVICES
The health and social work services generate gross output value of RM20.2 billion in 2017 compared to RM16.8 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 9.5 per cent. In tandem with the performance of gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by 9.5 per cent to record RM10.6 billion, thus resulting a value added of RM9.6 billion for the year 2017.
VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT
In the period of 2015 to 2017, the gross output value of health and social work services increased 9.5 per cent per annum. Hospital activities services was the largest contributor of gross output value with RM10.9 billion (53.9%) in Annual Economic Survey 2018. The second largest contributor was medical and dental practice with RM6.8 billion (33.8%) followed by other human health activities with RM1.8 billion (8.9%).
VALUE ADDED
In 2017, value added of health and social work services was RM9.6 billion with annual growth rate of 9.6 per cent within the period of two years. The hospital activities services recorded the highest value added in 2017 which amounted to RM4.6 billion (2015: RM3.8 billion). This was followed by the medical and dental practice activities of RM3.6 billion (2015: RM3.0 billion) and other human health activities of RM1.0 billion (2015: RM0.8 billion).
NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED
The number of persons engaged in this sector also reported an increase of 6.5 per cent to 137,350 persons as compared to 121,088 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM4.4 billion compared to RM3.7 billion in 2015. Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 121,732 persons with percentage share of 88.6 per cent, as against to working owners & unpaid family workers (12,620 persons; 9.2%) and paid part-time employees (2,998 persons; 2.2%).
