Overview

The Compendium of Environment Statistics (CES) presents statistics on environment for the period 2011-2015/2016 by topic namely air, water (inland and marine), land and urban/human settlements. The compilation of this statistics includes environment information, impacts of human activities on the environment and actions taken to minimise the impact. The data sources are obtained from various agencies. Statistics shown are related to the topics of air, water (inland and marine), land and urban/human settlements.

• AIR

In 2015, motor vehicles was the main source contributed to emission of pollutants to the air of 2.1 million tonnes. Within the same period, the number of cumulative motor vehicles registered was 26.3 million.

• WATER

  • Inland

In 2015, the production volume of water supplied was 16,159 liters per day. A total of 95.5 per cent of Malaysia’s population served with piped water in which 97.2 per cent of urban population and 93.0 per cent  of rural population is served with piped water.

  • Marine

Marine water quality status is monitored by the coastal areas, estuaries and islands according to four categories; Excellent, Good, Moderate and Poor. In 2015, all of three areas showed most of the stations recorded Moderate readings.

• LAND

In 2015, 18.3 million hectares (55.2%) from the total land of Malaysia (330,345 km²) was forested area.

 

• URBAN/HUMAN SETTLEMENTS

Generally, human activities has caused environment quality degradation and affected the human health. Contaminated food and water intake can cause five types of Food and Water Borne Diseases that are cholera, typhoid, dysentery, viral hepatitis A and food poisoning. In 2015, the incidence rate (IR) of food poisoning was the highest at 47.3 per 100,000 population.
