Overview

The Compendium of Environment Statistics (CES) 2015 presents statistics on environment by topic namely Air/Atmosphere, Water/Aquatic Environment (Inland and Marine), Land/Terrestrial Environment and Urban Environment/Human Settlements. Among the topics covered in the statistics are climate, pollution (including air, water and scheduled waste), forestry, population, vector borne diseases and Food and Water Borne Diseases. These statistics showed the relationship between the information on environment, impacts of human activities on environment and actions taken to minimise the impact.

In 2015, the selected statistics to be highlighted are statistics on pollution which include air, water and scheduled waste.

1.  Emission of pollutants to the atmosphere

In 2014, emission of pollutants to the atmosphere from power plant and motor vehicles increased by 20.0 per cent and 14.3 per cent respectively as compared to 2010.

2.  Status of river water quality status based on main pollutants

In 2014, the percentage of Clean river basins from NH₃-N and SS showed an increase as compared to 2010. No Clean river basins from BOD₅  was recorded in 2014.

3.  Quantity of scheduled waste generated

In 2014, the quantity of scheduled waste generated decreased to 1,665.3 thousand  tonnes (11.4%) as compared to 2010. Out of this total, 22.0 thousand tonnes were the quantity of clinical waste handled for destruction at incinerators. Despite the declining quantity of scheduled waste generated, the amount of clinical waste handled for destruction showed an increase of 31.0 per cent for the same period.
