Overview
- Live births decreased 1.5 per cent (7,554 births) from 501,303 births in 2010 to 493,749 births in 2019.
- Crude birth rate (CBR) also recorded a decrease from 17.5 births (2010) to 15.2 births per 1,000 population in 2019.
- The sex ratio at birth (SRB) recorded an increased from 106.8 males in 2010 to 107.2 males for every 100 females in 2019.
- Terengganu recorded the highest CBR with 23.7 births, while Pulau Pinang recorded the lowest CBR with 11.8 births per 1,000 population in 2019.
- Total fertility rate (TFR) began to record below replacement level with 2.0 children starting from 2015.
- Terengganu and Kelantan recorded the highest TFR with 3.1 children, while Pulau Pinang recorded the lowest TFR with 1.3 children per woman aged 15-49 years in 2019.
- Mean age of mother at first live birth recorded an increased from 27.2 years in 2010 to 27.7 years in 2019.
- Deaths increased by 29.1 per cent (39,616 deaths) from 136,109 deaths in 2010 to 175,725 deaths in 2019.
- Crude death rate (CDR) recorded an increase from 4.8 deaths in 2010 to 5.4 deaths per 1,000 population in 2019.
- Mortality sex ratio (MSR) recorded a decrease from 137.8 males in 2010 to 134.7 males for every 100 females in 2019.
- Age group 70-74 years recorded the highest number of deaths in 2019 with 20,504 deaths (11.7%) as compared to other age groups.
- Perak recorded the highest CDR with 7.6 deaths, while W.P. Putrajaya recorded the lowest CDR with 2.0 deaths per 1,000 population in 2019.
