Overview

LIVE BIRTHS

The total number of live births recorded in 2015 was 521,136 with a decrease of 1.4 per cent compared to 2014 (528,612). The crude birth rate declined from 17.2 (2014) to 16.7 (2015) per 1,000 population.

In 2015, live births of males and females, respectively, were  269,255 and 251,881. Meanwhile, live births in 2014 were 273,139 males and 255,473 females.

TOTAL FERTILITY RATE

The total fertility rate per woman aged 15-49 years in 2015 was 2.0 children compared to 2.1 children in 2014.

DEATHS

The total number of deaths recorded in 2015 was 155,786 with an increase of 3.6 per cent compared to 2014 (150,318). The crude death rate increased from 4.9 (2014) to 5.0 (2015) per 1,000 population.

Of the total deaths registered in 2015, male and female deaths were recorded at 89,449 and 66,337 respectively. Meanwhile, the total number of deaths in 2014 was 83,532 males and 63,786  females.

LIVE BIRTH BY STATE

The crude birth rate declined in all states except Terengganu and W.P. Labuan. In 2015, W. P. Putrajaya recorded the highest crude birth rate of 34.6 per 1,000 population, while Pulau Pinang recorded the lowest rate of 13.1 per 1,000 population (Chart 1).

DEATHS BY STATE

The crude death rate also increases in 12 states, however, declined in three states (W.P. Kuala Lumpur, W.P. Labuan and W.P. Putrajaya) and unchanged in Kelantan. In 2015, Perlis recorded the highest crude death rate of 7.1 per 1,000 population, while W.P. Putrajaya recorded the lowest rate of 2.3 per 1,000 population (Chart 2).
