INTRODUCTION
This publication presents statistics on the transportation and storage services which obtained from the Annual Economic Survey 2018 for reference year 2017. Transportation and storage services comprises of land transport; water transport; air transport; warehousing & support activities and post & courier services. The main statistics such as the value of gross output, value of intermediate input, value added, number of persons engaged, salaries & wages paid as well as value of fixed assets owned is also presented in this publication.
PERFORMANCE OF TRANSPORTATION AND STORAGE SERVICES
The transportation and storage services recorded gross output value of RM120.7 billion in 2017 compared to RM109.2 billion in 2015 with the annual growth rate value of 5.1 per cent per annum. In line with the growth in gross output, the value of intermediate input also increased by RM7.5 billion to record RM73.0 billion, the annual growth rate of 5.6 per cent and thus resulting a value added of RM47.7 billion for the year 2017.
VALUE OF GROSS OUTPUT
In the period of 2015 to 2017, the gross output value of transportation and storage services increased 5.1 per cent per annum. Warehousing & support activities was the largest contributor of gross output value with RM41.3 billion (34.2%) in Annual Economic Survey 2018. The second largest contributor was land transport with RM30.9 billion (25.6%) followed by air transport with RM24.8 billion (20.5%).
VALUE ADDED
The total value added recorded transportation and storage services for 2017 was RM47.7 billion with annual growth rate of 4.4 per cent within the period of two years. The warehousing & support activities recorded the highest value added in 2017 which amounted to RM21.6 billion (2015: RM19.5 billion). This was followed by the land transport of RM11.4 billion (2015: RM10.4 billion) and air transport of RM6.4 billion (2015: RM6.0 billion).
NUMBER OF PERSONS ENGAGED
The number of persons engaged in this sector reported an increase of 3.2 per cent to 437,926 persons as compared to 411,273 persons in 2015. Meanwhile, the salaries & wages paid in 2017 amounted to RM16.2 billion compared to RM14.3 billion in 2015. Paid full-time employees recorded a total of 382,778 persons with percentage share of 87.4 per cent, as against to working owners & unpaid family workers (49,701 persons; 11.3%) and paid part-time employees (5,447 persons; 1.2%).
